I want to post a myth about infertility every day this week on Facebook. I have four so far that I like, but now I am drawing a blank. Can you ladies help me with three more?
Here is what I have so far:
Myth
#1: Relax, Go on vacation, Get drunk etc. and you will get pregnant!
Reality: Infertility is a disease that can't be cured by relaxing or
getting drunk. For some couples it may be as simple as seeing a doctor
and taking a few pills. For others it takes years of extensive testing,
painful procedures, injections, and month after month of disappointment
and sadness. Even then not everyone will walk away with a baby. When
you tell someone dealing with infertility to relax it hurts them, think
before you speak.
Myth
#2: If you do fertility treatments (IUI, IVF) you are going to have 6+
kids like Jon and Kate or the Octomom. Reality: This is the comment
that bugs me the most. The goal of 99% of the fertility doctor?s out
there is to get one healthy baby. The irresponsible doctors like
Octomom's are the exception, not the rule. In fact, with IVF your chances
of High Order Multiples is reduced because you have more control over
how many embryos are transferred.
Myth
#3: If you adopt you will get pregnant. Reality: Adoption is not a cure
for infertility. It is a family building option that you should go into
because you want
to adopt, not because you want to get pregnant. Adoption is an amazing
and beautiful thing, and should be treated that way, not like it is your
second choice.
Myth
#4: If you do IVF you will get pregnant. Reality: For many couples it
takes many IVF cycles before they ever get pregnant. For many couples no
matter how many IVFs they do they will not get pregnant.
Re: NIAW: FB myths
Myth- If a couple has problems conceiving, somehting is wrong with her. Reality, 50% of IF is due to MFI.
Myth - If you have a child thru ART, you'll be able to conceive on your own for #2. Reality, pregnancy for the most part, does not "fix" you.
Myth - If you do IVF, you can ask to have twins. Reality: No reputable RE will do that for you.
That's all I can think of right now.
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
I would do one about the costs associated with IVF.
Such as:
Very few states have mandatory coverage for Infertility treatments. Most insurance companies still view it as a "non-medical" expense. Infertility is a disease and it is cruel and painful just like any other disease. Some people have to take out loans, sells their homes, or borrow money from family members to get a chance to have a child. There is no guarantee and they may have to make years of payments for a child they never got to take home.

I love these too and I will probably post them throughout the week as well....
I think I'm going to add one for myself because one friend NEEDS to hear this....
Myth: Babysitting a screaming child will make me reconsider having any children. Reality: My desire to mother a child will not be wiped out by simply sitting with a restless child for a couple of hours. I've wanted children for years and it's going to take a lot more than that to make the desire go away.

Myth: Infertility is an issue that affects older couples. If women today didn't wait so long to try to conceive they wouldn't have to go through infertility treatments.
Reality: Infertility is a disease can affect anyone at any time, regardless of age, race, etc.
(Stolen from Resolve)
Myth: Why don't you just forget it and adopt? After all, there are so many babies out there who need homes!
Fact: For many, adoption is a happy resolution to infertility. However, most people explore medical treatment for infertility prior to considering adoption. In addition, traditional adoption options have changed, and adoption can be more costly and time-consuming than expected. It is, however, still possible to adopt the healthy baby of your dreams. There are also many older children and children with special needs available for adoption.
(Mine)
Myth: This (Infertility) is happening to you for a reason
Truth: This statement is difficult to hear. I?m sure God would not do this to a person to make them stronger or a better parent!
