Austin Babies

SBR: where would you go for dinner...

after your dissertation defense with your advisor(s), your husband, your dad (a meat and potatoes kind of guy), his wife, and friends?  You are 9 months pregnant and can't eat very large portions of food anymore, and your friends may or may not be bringing their kid(s).  We will be at most 8 adults and 3 kids, probably more likely to be 7 adults and no kids.

Your dad is treating, so budget is not an issue. The bigger issue is comfort level for everyone, i.e. being able to hear each other, not too crazy of a menu, but still a "nice" restaurant.

DH suggested Fonda San Miguel but I'm not sure how well that would sit with my dad.  I thought of the Roaring Fork, but my dad has been there before, and I thought he might like to try something different (although he LOVED that restaurant).

Other ideas I had were Clay Pit, Jaspers, or... PG brain won't let me remember the third.

  • NXNW, Jack Allen's Kitchen, Fogo de Chao, Hudson's on the Bend, Three Forks, Sullivan's, Ruth Chris', El Arbol, Braise, Driskill Grille. ...( Jasper's is always good)

  • i think clay pit is a great idea! the roaring fork up north is great, our favorite spot when we get a night out. it has lots of space and a deck to walk with little ones who might get antsy. theyve always been super nice to ruby when we go there. our parents have been there before too, but it's just always so good and so easy that we keep taking them back.

what about some of the places in the domain? we dont eat out much, but im sure some other girls might have suggestions for what's there. eddie v's downtown?

hudsons on the bend is so delicious, but i would not go there with kids. no.way. i want to enjoy my meal when im there and relax, something not done with little ones in a restaurant.  east side cafe is always awesome and nice about accommodating a larger group.

  • is Oak Hill too far to go?  I was going to suggest Jack Allen's Kitchen.  Your dad could get a steak or chicken-fried whatever, and then there are some fancier things if anyone else has a different taste. It's also a lot easier than stuff downtown.

Jasper's or anything in the domain would be a good choice too.  Maybe McCormick and Schmicks or North?  NXNW is another option up north, but I don't know if it's special enough for a dissertation dinner (might be on par with Jack Allen's).

  • moonshine is a pretty excellent choice - meets the 'meat-and-potatoes' and easy to hear/converse stipulations... It's one of my favs in town.  Only problem could be a longish wait if you're going on a weekend night.  they might take reservations for larger parties though.

  • i wanted to add that i've always wanted to go to fonda san miguel, but we are too cheap. i did, however, spend the last ten minutes looking at the menu and i would go there. the ambiance is supposed to be wonderful and they have a beef tenderloin for the meat and potatoes guy :) i would want to be somewhere special bc it's such a big deal.

btw, i have a pretty blue maternity dress if you need something to wear :)

  • Moonshine is a good suggestion. Or what about Z'Tejas - family-friendly & would appeal to a broad spectrum, I would think.
  • Perry's is HEAVENLY!!!

    Moonshine is a good suggestion

  • Go to Olivia and sit outside.  Their garden area is really cute and would be perfect if kids get added in to the mix.

  • For that situation I would go to Austin Land and Cattle (not Texas!). Local owned, VERY good, will make your dad happy (steaks). It is nice but we have taken the kids to early dinner (6ish) and it was fine. Oh and they take reservations.
