Cincinnati Babies

? For: Good Sam and Bethesda North (Tri-Health) Mommy's

I will be delivering at Good Samaritan hospital with this baby. We got the packet of information that talks about all the different classes that are offered for women delivering with Tri-Health.

What classes did you take, do you think it was worth it, and would you recommend it to a first time mom?

TIA!

I didn't take any of the classes . . . I also didn't do my tour of good sam until it was like, "whoa, I could have this kid at any minute".

  • We took the all-day childbirth class and the breastfeeding class that was included in the price of the childbirth class.

I read plenty of books about childbirth and breastfeeding during my pregnancy so I didn't really find the classes all that helpful. To me as a first time mom, I felt like I needed to take a class just to take a class. It was nice to go over some of the breathing techniques. Acutally that was the most I got out of the classes. We left the breastfeeding class half way through. The lady had outdated information, and I was fairly comfident in bf due to the books I had read.

Oh and FYI the all day class also covered some of the basic baby care items, like how to give a bath ect.

  • I am delivering at Good Sam, but this is my 2nd- my first was delivered in Louisville.

The only class I took was a breastfeeding class and my husband went with me.  I really wanted to be successful and most of my friends had issues breastfeeding.

That being said- I wanted an epidural and wanted no part of natural child birth.  If you are wanting to go naturally or at least try and labor naturally I would suggest taking classes for sure.

It really depends on how much you have read on your own and what you are wanting to do for your birth.  For me I knew I wanted an epidural so I just spoke with my OB and asked her when I should call or head to the hospital.  I just went off that.

    Good luck!

  • I was scheduled for the following

    TriHealth - All day childbirth

    Breastfeeding & Beyond

    TotSaver- Infant/Toddler CPR

    Happiest Baby on the Block

    Small Talk

    Your Baby's Amazing Journey

    Infant Mothercare & Safety Class

Fast Track to Fatherhood (Kevin was scheduled/took)

We "obviously" thought we needed all of them. Out of all of them we managed to take the TriHealth all day childbirth, breastfeeding & beyond, your baby's amazing journey & Kevin took fast track to fatherhood.

We were scheduled for the rest during the time that my water broke, I gave birth & the two weeks after he came - since Nolan came so early.

I still plan on taking the Small Talk class & the CPR class - the rest now I think I'm all good on.

I delivered at Good Sam and I agree with this except for if you are wanting to try laboring med-free I would highly HIGHLY recommend taking more than a 1 day class offered at a hospital. I would look into some of the different methods (bradley, hyponobirthing, etc) and see which fits best for you and then take classes for that specific method privately. We did Bradley Method classes and found them HUGELY informative and helpful-- while some of the info was in books I think there is a benefit to taking the class with an actual instructor and other couples.

I would recommend maybe taking a tour too just so you know where to go and a breastfeeding class cant hurt (this was included in my Bradley classes--but if Good Sam offers one I would take advantage of this).

  • I didn't take any classes and I don't regret it or feel like I missed out on anything important.  I'm CPR certified for work and DH is a paramedic, so we didn't need that.  I was planning on an epidural, so we skipped the childbirth classes.  Even if I had taken them I don't know if I would have been able to use any of the breathing techniques they teach...in the moment I just did whatever I had to to get through the contractions until I was able to get the epidural.  I was planning on taking the tour at B-north because I had #1 at Mercy, but switched for #2.  But I ended up in L&D for a kidney stone right before the tour was scheduled, so I pretty much saw it all when we were there for that.
  • Thanks for the input ladies!

I'm planning on having an epidural (I used to think I wanted natural....but when I got pregnant, I was like, "uh...no".) so I'll probably opt out of the all-day child birth class. I'd think they'd give me breathing suggestions when I am in labor anyway.

I think I'm definitely going to take the infant/child cpr class with DH. We have both been certified before, but aren't currently. I'd like a refresher!

    Then probably a breastfeeding class.

I know DH wants to do baby sign language, but I figure we can probably do that on our own without taking a class.
