unswaddling- is this normal?

We are working on unswaddling LO.  He has been in a danny sling forever now and needs to come out due to rolling over.  He also needs to be swaddled to sleep but same for that with the rolling over.  It isn't working.  If he isn't swaddled he frantically rubs his forehead and plays with his paci.  He will take it out of his mouth then try to get it back in- unsuccessfully- if he does get it back in he will take it out again. Is this normal?  Any advice?  Otherwise he will just roll over onto his tummy and try to eat the mattress while screaming at it.  It isn't a little cry- it is full fledged screaming.  He gets almost out of breath from it, sometimes he even starts coughing from the crying.  Please help!! TIA!!

I know the feeling - every time DS is unswaddled, he rubs at his face, then the soother falls out, and he wakes up.  We have been doing some one-armed swaddling, and that is starting to work.   I'm hoping after a while of alternating one arm out, I can eventually have both arms out.

(I've also started putting him on his tummy **gasp**...he's 11 months (8 corrected) and he has been sleeping much better.  He doesn't wave his arm around as much when he's on his front, and I can pat his back gently to get him to sleep.  I figure he's able to roll around as much as he needs to at this age, so it should be okay.  It's mad a big difference in the past week.)

     Hope things go okay!

  • My daughter was born at 33 weeks, and she slept swaddled tightly in a blanket with velcro until she was five months old.  Every time I tried putting her down unswaddled, she'd wake up instantly and cry.  When her grandparents would put her down, they would think they could get her to sleep without it, but it never worked.  Be patient and don't worry...eventually he will be ready to sleep unswaddled.  Just keep trying it every now and then, and one day it'll work.
