Dear RLS, I hate you.

Anybody know of any cures? I am dying... I've tried eating bananas and stretching before bed which someone suggested but that does nothing. I'm going to ask the doc this week. Last night I actually prayed and suggested that I would swap RLS for M/S if it were possible... lol. I never thought I would think that! I get no sleep at all. I wouldn't mind the no sleep - it's just the constant twitching of everything that is driving me bonkers!

Re: Dear RLS, I hate you.

  • Oh, sister I hear ya! I'm miserable with it. It's really my only pregnancy complaint. It's making me crazy. My OB suggested benadryl at bedtime, lots of water, and no caffeine. It seems to have helped, but it's still there. He said that it should go away upon delivery. Yay.

  • I feel your pain. I started getting it about 5 weeks ago. It's awful! It's gotten a LOT better for me recently because of a few things: I try to go for a walk at night after dinner (even for just 15 minutes), my partner massages my calves, I started taking extra magnesium about an hour before I go to bed. If I can't go for a walk, I usually stretch and do a few basic yoga postures to get my circulation going. I also went to see a herbalist who put together a pregnancy/relaxation tea for me, so I drink that in the evenings.

I'm not a huge fan of Dr. Oz but he did a segment on RLS that I heard about from someone. He swears by this old remedy of putting a bar of soap under your sheets at the bottom of your bed. https://www.doctoroz.com/videos/restless-leg-syndrome. Anyways, I know it sounds strange but it could be worth a try!

  • My coworker said to sit in a tub of hot water before bed...that's the trick. Try it tonight and see if it works.

  • I have cut out caffine for the most part.. some days I slip. I only drink water other than my occasional cup of coffee. I definately should walk more... I do stretch. I tried taking tylenol pm one night and it made the symptoms worse. So i've been scared to try Benedryl. I can't take a hot bath cuz my house is ancient and the bath wont fill completely hot.. I can only take a shower.. :(   I did however take my first bath last week in over a year! I wound up boiling water on the stove.. DH was like WTH are you doing? I had the lights dimmed, the candle going and itunes playing. I stayed in that bath until it was cold and I enjoyed every second of it!

I have actually heard the bar of soap trick. I almost bought some the other day but thought I would give the bananas a try first... I think I may do that.. it can't hurt right?? A little strange.. haha. If that doesn't work I am so cutting off my limbs and freezing them until after LO arrives.. then I will have them re-attached. :D  I wouldn't wish this upon anyone! It is also my only complaint.

  • I am really hating the RLS too, it is driving me crazy. My coworker said to drink tonic water but I haven't tried it yet. He is really smart and gave me a chemical reason why it worked but I forget and I don't want to drink it if it's really gross and makes me puke. If you find something that works please let me know!

haha. Well I used to drink vodka and tonic sometimes...  I will brave it for you... I am open to anything! I am going to the store later for bars of soap, tonic water and more gummy prenatal vitamins! I'll let you know!

  • I have the same problem.  I had RLS before pregnancy, but it has gotten much worse. I asked the Dr. if I could drink tonic water (it has Quinine in it which is supposed to help), but he said he didn't want me drinking it.  I just stretch as much as possible before bed and twitch for about a half hour before I fall asleep.  Doesn't seem like there is much we can do for RLS when pregnant.  Someone did suggest doing squats against the wall (like you are sitting in a chair)  to tire your legs out.  I tried it but didn't notice a significant difference.

Good Luck finding something that works! I might go ahead and try the soap trick.

  • Standing barefoot on cold tile or concrete for a few minutes seems to help some. I've had problems with RLS for most of my life and just discovered this trick. Of course, now that it's getting warmer and the floors aren't as cold it doesn't help much.
