3 yr old scared of public bathrooms.

My 3 yr old is terrified of public restrooms. I know it stems from the automatic flushers.  It might have flushed on her a time or two while she was on it but it wasnt a big deal. Just recently she hasnt been wanting to even walk into the restrooms.  If I know she has to pee, I have to pick her up and hold her over the toilet. If she has to poop she will hold it and complain until she can get to a "approved restroom".  (usually our house or a relatives house)

Any suggestions on how to get her over it. It is becoming tricky when we are out shopping or going on long trips. Bathroom breaks usually involve tears, screaming and me trying to calm her down.

  • would she sit on a travel potty? we keep one int he car and love it. it folds out and would fit on the big potty too if you wanted to try and transition her back to using it. you can get it at bru, buybuybaby, amazon, and i think baby earth might have it too.

  • I lurk here, so sorry for the random posting. My godson was afraid of public restrooms too. My best friend told me that she carries around a travel potty seat (it folds and fits in the diaper bag) and a pad of post-its. She sticks the post it over the sensor on the toilet so that it doesn't flush until he is done pottying. Hope this helps!
