Ugh...4 month wakeful?

J was napping for about 90 minutes in the morning and another 90 minutes in the afternoon along with a short catnap before bedtime, but now we are back to the dreaded 30-45 minute nap all.day.long. and it takes him forever to get to sleep if at all.  He is sooooo tired and just cannot get to sleep no matter where he is (on me, in the swing, crib, etc.) or how he goes to sleep (swaddled or not, with paci or not).  How do you break the overtired cycle? Or is this just par for the course right now and we just wait it out?  He's still sleeping OK at night with just 1 wake-up.

  • Aw man, just hugs for you -- I think it will probably resolve itself.  DS took 30-45min naps until almost 1year.  Then he suddenly started taking longer ones.  I tried everything under the sun, and then he just did it on his own.  His sleep also always gets worse around milestones, or teething... both make a difference!!  Thankfully J's nighttime sleeping is good!!!  :)

  • Thank you...this is sort of what I was expecting to hear.  We will wait it out and hope it doesn't last long!

  • I have to admit I'm not a real believer in the "4 month wakeful" aside from the fact that I do believe sleep becomes less biological at that time. It could be a stage, it could be an "opportunity" to re-teach naps at that time...who knows, all kids are different. My daughter was a champion napper after 4 months, my son STILL does not nap with any consistency.

Yeah...I guess there's just a lot going on.  He's learning to roll, just got his 2 bottom teeth, and he's also just gotten over a cold about a week ago.

By re-teach naps do you mean be more consistent and do some form of sleep training? We put him to bed an hour earlier tonight since he's so tired so maybe that could be part of the problem.  We'll keep the earlier bedtime for a few more days to see if it makes a difference.
