Here is what I did for food and decor if anyone is interested for their own rainbow party.
Her birthday banner. I have stamp set for the letters and then I emboss
them on paper. I use the Martha Stewart circle paper cutter to cut out
all the circles. You might not be able to see it but the stripes on
the paper are rainbow colored - I wanted to find a nice rainbow paper
for the bigger circles but failed at finding anything local.

My front door rainbow wreath. I wanted a good pic from the outside of
the house but torrential rains prevented it. Like pp who made this I
used many more balloons and greening pins than the original link but I
definitely found I could space them out more than I thought - about an
inch apart.

For the cake table, I put some floral foam wrapped in white tissue paper
inside the vase, filled with clear marbles around the outside, and hot
glued ribbon and a bow to to it. Then I used the large and small
lollipops. Also just some jellybeans sorted into colors (will be used
for easter next weekend)

I made second smaller balloon wreath for inside. I wanted to cut out
more hearts and really do a nice inverted V leading up to the balloon
wreath but didn't have the time.

This was the table for the goody boxes, party hats, blowers and I made
the lollipop boxes - painted a wooden pencil box white, glued on some
rainbow ribbon, put floral foam inside covered in white tissue paper and
stuck the smaller sized lollipops from Oriental Trading Co in there.

For other decor, we did use one set of the hanging lantern things, but
really the day was a little stressful with Molly's EI so we didn't hang
the other 2 sets.

I also wanted to make 2 or 3 more of these but lacked the time with
Molly's illness and family being here early. I freehanded the cloud and
used some string and punched out hearts and a hot glue gun for this.

Present table

One of the food tables. On top are jello flavored popcorn in buckets
from party city. I labeled each one with the flavor. Below are cookies
and the rainbow of fruit veggies - big hit. I did eventually put out
the veggie and fruit dips not pictured here.

Strawberry lemonade, pulled pork, baked beans, buffalo chicken dip and southwest pasta salad for food.

And then the cake which came out as well as I had hoped it would. Even
better it was pretty tasty too and Molly ate her whole piece.

Thanks for looking!
Re: Rainbow decor for Molly's party
Love it!
I may have to steal this idea at some point... it would also make a cute baby "shower"....
How much food coloring did you have to put in the cake to make the colors so bright?
once again, I'm in awe
and feel bad for the minimal decorations I do!
I know a mom on another board is planning it for baby shower as well - it would go really well for that too. As for the food coloring I used a lot less than I thought I would have to use - about 1/4 tsp of the gel food coloring on average. It looked a little iffy before baking because the batter added in some white flecks but after baking the colors were all I had hoped for.
First, no one should feel badly for their own decorations. Maggie's second totally came out of a box (Ariel theme) because Molly was so little, plus the kids have fun just playing with new toys so the decor is just because I like to theme it up.
For the cake, here is the blog post about and she did it on Martha Stewart too so you can watch the clip as well.

I followed the recipes, except for the cake I added a tsp of almond extract and for the icing I subbed vanilla extract for the lemon (not sure if lemon would be a hit with the kids, especially the little ones). I did one extra layer for fun and it was about 1cup of batter per layer. If you only do 6 layers WIlton has a gel icing color pack that works perfectly. I made the cakes Wed, frosted Thurs and took it out out of the fridge about 3 hrs before cutting - probably should have taken it out 5 or 6 hours before since the middle was still a little cold and the harder icing made it a bit more difficult to cut.
It was yummy. Not the best cake ever but still yummy while looking great. I can see how the cake itself would be good as a coconut cake and I may try that another time (in her recipe she says the recipe started out as a coconut cake). I really love the layered look and want to try out some more mnany layered cakes in the future.
I would totally hire you to plan LO's birthday party! Are you available in January of next year? :-)
I love love love the cake and the food - everything is just gorgeous.
This is such a cute concept! All your decorations are adorable as well.
I'm also jealous of your cake. I really don't think I could ever make something like that happen (nor ice it as well as you did!)
Thanks everyone! While I feel party planner would be a fun career I also think that it would just become work if I do it everyday. Plus maybe when they are older and we are a little more financially secure I could afford to try it out, but my day job pays decently and it would probably take me years to make that much as a planner. Plus I feel like my stuff is good enough for kid parties but on a pro level I would just blend in with averageness. Not to mention I have serious trouble pricing my goods and services - I think about what I would pay and that is nowehere near enough to cover my time and materials. Just those cookies for the time they took (let's say I pay myself $5 an hour) and materials ($15) would end up costing $2 a piece - would you pay $60 for 30 cookies?
But thank you for all the compliments!
For the popcorn I love the Our Best Bites website. The colored stuff is the fruity popcorn but their cinnamon bun popcorn is the best and I give it away at Christmas.
Everything looks fantastic!
That's awesome!!
