WHY do my #$%#% in-laws not understand that IT IS NOT OKAY to call the DAY OF and announce that they are going to stop by DURING A MEALTIME?!?!?!?!?
$%^&$%^&$%&$%^&$%^&$%^&$%^$%
Every single effing time they do this. "Oh, we're just stopping by tonight at 5". "Oh, we're just coming by for a few minutes at noon". Um, no. We have a four year old and he's used to his routine. At 5 PM, we will be eating. I'm really not interested in suddenly coming up with a dinner for 5 people and a baby when i was planning to just have pizza.
I know they don't expect to eat with us but THIS is what gets me- they have no idea that it's just fcuking RUDE of us to either eat in front of them or not offer them something to eat. I'm sorry, but if you're in my house between the hours of 5 and 6 PM on a weeknight I feel obliged to feed you dinner. A normal person SHOULD feel obliged to feed you dinner.
I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate them.
HATE THEM.

Yeah, that is rude.
What about asking them to bring something for them to eat. Just say something like, "Since it is short notice, I have a favor to ask of you. I wasn't planning on having guests for dinner. Our dinner is promptly at 5pm. Since I don't have time to run out and get more food. Can you please bring your own meals with you when you arrive at 5?" I've done this to my MIL and SIL. Not only do I get last minute notice but they have special diets and can't eat half the stuff that I make so unless I have advanced notice, I can't cook for them.
Yup! This would be me! And I'm not even joking! LOL! That would piss me off!
I second this notion! Or even better, you take the kids out and leave DH at home to entertain them.
I'm on the bandwagon. That's when you say, oh I'm so sorry we've already got plans to be away. Maybe we can pencil something in in advance so we can be sure to be here when you visit.
And then BE AWAY!
That's seriously rude of them. Same for my house. If you're here any time around 5-630 you're gettin' fed. Although, I'm not ashamed to say that I'm only offering twice, and if you decline, I'm still eatin' in front of you.
They live an hour away too!! They drive one hour, stay 20 minutes, and drive home.
CRAZY, I tell you. CRAZY.
My IL's live 2.5 hours away, and my MIL still pops in on a whim. Sacramento is still her closest major shopping/Nordstroms, so it's really not uncommon for her to make trips every couple weeks with no plan/notice.
Eh, I'm usually walking out the door at work at 5 pm and dinner at our house isn't until 6:30.
As for your ILs, I wouldn't change plans for them. Do what you usually do and let them observe if they can't follow basic rules about planning in advance. It's what we do. Sure, you can come by, but we'll be doing something.
Is it possible to tell them, "no, I'm sorry, you cannot stop by at 5pm. you can stop by at 3pm, but I'm not prepared for hosting guests last minute at Alex's dinner time. It's very stressful to me and I'm going to have to ask you for at least two day's notice if you are going to be present at lunch or dinner time from now on.". Just honestly and calmly? And if they insist, I would say "No, you cannot come over at 5pm today, you can come over at 5pm on Sunday or Monday though. I'd be happy to see you then.". If DH disagrees, he can make them dinner.
Rather than avoidance today and having to deal with it another time, it would start solving the problem.
I'm not even going to throw down with the advice because, honestly, you can't fix (or change) crazy.
You have my total and complete empathy - it would p!ss me off beyond belief.
THIS, is my exact thought. AND I would probably leave the house at 4:30 and not come back till 7!
Yuck...Can you call and say you were planning on getting pizza for dinner and ordered a extra will you pick it up on the way?
I dunno but its lame
br
This exactly!
You have NO IDEA how many times I have exactly done just this. Calm, rational.
Lara is right. They are just whacked. Maybe they'll choke on their pizza.
Speaking of pizza... if that is what you're having tonight, I meant to tell you that I felt like visiting around 5:15.
the secret blog
All of this! Hugs H!
Alibee, I know we often don't agree but I KNOW I'd enjoy a meal with you 10,000 times more than a meal with my MIL! Come on over!!
If I bring pizza, can I come too?
Oh yeah, I get that too. So sorry. Crazy is tough. I have a lot of it in my family too. That's why I live 3000 miles away from them
I can't imagine. That just sucks. For me, I just never know what the state of my house will be in and have been known to say "thanks for the offer to stop by but it's not a good day today". Screw 'em if they can't give more notice!
Do you think she has an Easter Jesus Monster Truck to give to Simon? I'm sure she doesn't want him to feel left out....especially since he's so sad, right?
Just spit water through my nose! I think D might be onto something here...
OMG! That's it, Simon needs his truck BEFORE Easter! So sorry, you need to move a little further away from them. Lincoln is a nice place... it would give you some more distance!
Crap I'm just reading this. I'm with Lara, unfortunately they are WACKED and you can't do anything. I'm sure they called CF right ? Then you were told ?
I still stand by my " I'm sorry, I'm nursing Alex AND Simon in my bedroom, then they are going to sleep. Then sneak out the window with both of them and go eat with the three of you !! ".
Sorry
In laws suck. At least you only see them once a month and not 3x a week
