Hi,
DH and I have been TTC for almost a year now which I know isnt that long I know. What had happened was I was having really irregular cycles and never knew when to expect AF so I went to the doctor and he said I wasnt ovulating which I suspected from charting and using my clear blue fertility monitor. Anyways he wanted to start me on Clomid but I asked him if we should do an SA on my DH just to see before I go through 6 months of clomid with no results. Well the SA was not good. He had very low motlity and very high ammounts of abnormal sperm. My doctors MA called me with these results and said he would probably refer us to a urologist but she wasnt sure of anything and he was on vacation. GREAT!!! I am supposed to start on my first month of clomid on Sunday and she couldnt tell me if I should take it or not. All she would say is the doctor would contact me on Monday. I am so nervous I feel like I am in limbo and am just in shock. Whats next? Is there anything that can be done? I just wish I had a clue what to expect next.
Re: new to tttc just wondering what to expect
I'm sorry you are having troubles. I think you are in the right place. You will learn a lot. I would not waste the time with the Clomid at this point, and I suggest you get in touch with a RE.
Good luck!
I'm sorry you did not have good results on the S/A. A Urologist will most likely check for a varicocele and also YH's hormone levels. IF he does have a varicocele there is an Outpatient surgery that can be done to possibly improve the numbers.
IF you decide to go on Clomid, make sure your OB monitors you closely. Some RE give out this Rx as if it were asprin.
Good Luck.
Hi and welcome. I have lots of advice!
First, I would not take the clomid if the SA was not good. There's no point in that. and you can only be on Clomid for so long because of the cancer risk, I think.
Second, You should go ahead and get a referral to an RE because they are specialists and OBGYN generally don't know that much about it.
Third, if you are going to take clomid, you need to be monitored by vaginal ultrasounds to make sure you are producing the right number of follicles. Too few and it won't work, Too many and you've got quads on your hands. An RE knows this.
Fourth, Definitely go see a urologist with a specialty in infertility. My doctor's blog is here and has some good information. https://www.maledoc.com/blog/
Lastly, may I ask what your husband's numbers were. How many sperm per milliter and what % were abnormal. I have found that OBs sometimes don't know what they are talking about when it comes to SAs.

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not attractive. - Happy Gilmore
I am so sorry you are having trouble.
We've been through all the testing, and everything on my end is 'normal,' except my doctor is slightly concerned with my spotting. On the other hand, my DH's SA came back low all three with motility as the most concern at 29%. My doctor is starting us on Clomid this month.
Good luck!
Perfectly stated!

Are you also doing IUI? I would be concerned with doing clomid without it and low sperm numbers...GL!

No, my doctor just has me doing Clomid. When he looked at my charts and saw that I spotted anywhere from 2-8 days before AF, he mentioned that I may not be ovulating 'strong' every cycle, so he's starting with Clomid. I am concerned about this, and I called yesterday to speak with him about the reasoning behind it because it doesn't make sense to me. If the numbers are low, how is me ovulating stronger helping? (He was out of the office yesterday so I still don't have an answer.) What do you all think?
Yeah, I'd probably not start the clomid this month...especially if you can't get a solid answer from your doc's office. The side effects of clomid are so irritating...hot flashes, and bad bad bad mood swings. I also agree with double checking the SA, My DH got one over a year ago, and it was normal, so we didn't think to double check it, but it's always a good idea anyway. We'll probably have to get another one in the next few months after we have our first consultation with an RE.
Good luck!
Completely agree with everything Chicago said!
This exactly. Don't waste your clomid cycles until you see an RE and get a better plan.
