Just wondering....bath related

So i just wondering how you do baths with more than one child, I usually give my DD who is 4 and my DS who is 14 months a bath together, they love it and i never leave the side of the tub. I ask becuase my MIL gave me the side eye one day when i mentioned it. I dont see anything wrong with it at their age. What do you think?

  • I think 4 is too old to take baths with a sibling of the opposite sex simply because they clearly notice the difference between brother/sister now. It's kinda hard to explain because I see your point of view but I would've given you the side eye as well.
  • I give them a bath together. Why on earth would I give them seperate baths? Takes up more time, imo.

I get the bath ready while they both have playtime/nakeytime. Once the bath is ready, Preston (my 4.5 year old), gets in and I wash his hair and body. Once he is washed. Harrison gets to join him and I wash him up. They play together for about 10-15 minutes (they both love bathtime) and then I take Harrison out, get him ready for bed (the bedroom is right next to the bathroom). When I'm done with him, I let him down and get Preston out and lotioned up. He puts his own jammies on.

I think she didn't like it because they are opposite sexes....but honestly they dont pay any attention they love to play together and it saves time, obviously i wont be doing it that way for too much longer but for now i dont see a problem.

As long as it hasn't become an issue, then I would still bathe them together too. It's all a learning process anyway (opposite sex speaking). We are a very open family though.

  • Wow, I a shocked anyone would give this the side-eye, maybe if the kid was 7 or 8 but 4.  Heck yeah I'd be bathing them together!

  • My sister and I used to BEG to take baths together... it was so much fun.  My brother was a baby and we used to love "helping" him in the bath. (We are each 2 year apart)  I see nothing wrong with it...I think once you are in kindergarden alot of kids become "too cool" for bathing with a sibling.

What's wrong with them noticing the difference, though? I think it would be a fine time to start introducing to a kid that boys and girls are different.  Also, a lot of older siblings like to "help" with the LO when it comes to diaper changes, etc.  You can't hide the fact that one has a penis and the other has a vagina forever. I am not being snarky. I just don't get why it's so bad that they see they are different from their sibling.

  • They bathe together.  Just like every other issue, it all depends on the kids.  If you feel comfortable and think they are comfortable, I'd keep bathing them together.
  • my 3 y/o and 1 y/o take a bath together every day.  It would be a PITA to do it separately.

  • I have all girls so I can't say what I would do if I had both.  My first 2 kids are 2 years apart.  They took baths together until they started showering at 4 and 6.  At that point showers were much easier with their hair and they loved it.  When my third came along the older 2 were 5 and 7 so she has also taken a bath herself.  I personally think at 4 it is still fine for a brother and sister to take a bath together, until one becomes uncomfortable.
  • For the same sex I would definitely do baths together. I'm guessing your MIL was referring to the fact that they are opposite sexes. IMO 4 is a little old since they are a boy and a girl and they notice gender differences at that point. If it were me I would probably do separate baths, definitely by the time your DD goes to kindergarten. That said, I don't think I would be judgey to you about it.

DD is very smart and helpful she has liked to help with DS since he first came home, we have already had a talk about how boys are girls are different. I know some people probably think it is to early for that but we are very open in our house and when i was changing DS's diaper DD asked me one day why his private area looked different than hers, I simply explained it to her and she just said ok and that was it. Now she actually gets upset if DS doesn't get to take a bath with her.

Obviously written by somebody who does not have a 4 year old.

My six year old girl takes a shower because of her longer hair, but sometimes bathes with her toddler brother.  My middle boy takes a bath with his toddler brother all the time.  My middle boy(almost 5) and girl (just turned 6) see each other naked every day.  They share a room and get changed at the same time. It is not a big deal that one has a penis and the other a vagina.  Next year the toddler and the girl will switch rooms.

I'm sure my brother and I were still taking baths together when I was 6 and he was 4. We also shared a room so we had a vary similar situation. Once I said I wanted/needed more privacy, my parents made that possible.

  • Together - 3.5yo boy, 14mo girl...they ask to take baths together.
  • People have way too much time on their hands to worry about giving siblings bath together? Everything is an issue these days when it comes to children.

  • I think that is appropriate.
