Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If your baby didn't come home from H in NB sizes...

how big were they at birth?

I bought a really cute Carter's NB outfit for baby girl to come home in and she is measuring large, last U/S wasn't a growth U/S but the tech had about 9 dift ways to tell me my baby is fat (I do have gestational diabetes - which often causes babies to be big).  so just wondering how big is too big for newborn size, thanks!

I do have a back up 0-3 packed as well...

  • My LO couldn't wear NB when she was born and she weighed 9 lbs 5 oz. But she lost a lot of weight this first week, gained some back, and now she's 8 lbs 9 oz and she fits in NB sizes. She was 20.5 in long. Some of the NB stuff is a little short on her, so I imagine she won't be in it for long. HTH.

  • They told me at my 35 week ultrasound that my baby was already about 8lbs so i was thinking that he would be 10ish when he came out, come to find out he was only 8lbs 4oz and fit into newborn.

I packed both a newborn and 0-3 just to be sure, its not that much space so i would just keep the plan to pack both.

  • First, your babies are all so adorable!  and Second thanks for the advice, her NB outfit is so much cuter than the 0-3 I packed, maybe I should re investigate her closet!  Thanks again!

  • It depends on your baby, my little girl was 9 pounds 12 ounces and 22 inches, and the newborn stuff fit her better than the 0-3 in the first week....and I find Carter's has run big on all 3 of my kids (the boys were 9 pounds 5 ounces at birth).  I took both newborn and 0-3 to the hospital and she wore the newborn outfit home, she was still so curled up that it just fit better.

  • DD had to come home in preemie clothes she was 5 lbs 15 oz.
  • My DD had to have premie clothes and she was 6lbs 10oz when we left the hospital... just very petite...

  • My LO was 9 lbs and he DID fit in the newborn size for the first week. I think Carters runs bigger than a lot of other brands. You'll need 0-3 stuff at some point regardless, so it wouldn't hurt to pick up another outfit.

  • Also keep in my that sometimes they will say the baby is a certain size and be off.  At 36 weeks I was told I had a 6.5 lb baby.  Then when I delivered at 39 weeks, she wasn't even 6 lbs.
  • My first didn't fit in NB for long at all. Maybe a week tops? He was 8 pounds 13 oz and 21 inches long. He gained very quickly.

My 2nd and 3rd wore NB clothing for a little longer. They were 7 lbs 8 oz 20.5 in and 8 lbs 9.3 oz 21 inches.

We had mostly Carter's NB clothing. It's amazing how big some of the 0 to 3 mo clothing will be on even a 9 pound baby!

  • I was told at my 30 week u/s that DS was already nearly 6 lbs, so I never bothered buying nb clothes.  DD was 8 lbs 14 oz and 19 inches when she was born, but I don't remember what size she started off in.  DS was 9 lbs 15 oz and 21 inches, and fit all right into the 0-3.  They were a little big on him, so maybe he could've squeezed into nb.  HTH.

  • DD was 8lbs 3oz and 20 1/4 inches at birth. She was in NB clothes for a good 2-3 weeks. She has been growing like a weed, and at 10.5 weeks old  is now filling out 3-6. She is around 12lbs 4oz and a little over 23 inches long.

I have some nb stuff that looks bigger than some of my 3-6 month clothes.  the sizes range almost as bad as womens jeans

  • My LO was 9lb 2oz and 21in.  He fit in his newborn clothes (mostly Carter's) for about a week and a half.  It says up to 8lbs but he fit perfectly and the 0-3 was way too big on him that first week.

  • I was told at a 38 week u/s that she was 8lb 14oz, she was born at 41+ weeks at 9lb 13oz and 23" long. No NB clothes for us! Made me kind of sad since H had gone out of his way to get some cute stuff at Carters on his last trip to the US (didn't have Carters in Canada at the time) and now she'll never get to wear them! :(

  • Mine was born at 9 lbs 2 oz and 21 inches and came home 8 lbs 5 oz. At her 1 week appt she was back up to 8-12. At all these times, she fit into the newborn size clothing and she's still wearing NB. Most 0-3 is pretty huge on her. 0-3 pants are ridiculously huge on her.

DD was 8lb13oz at birth, 8lb4oz when we went home, and she was kind of between NB and 0-3 sizes. She never wore NB clothes or diapers - at least not comfortably. She was too long for the NB outfits (22 inches, she was long & skinny)...they fit her tightly head-to-toe and she looked much more comfortable in the 0-3, even though some of them were big on her. She wore a NB outfit all of ONE day.

And I disagree that Carters runs small, but their sizing is definitely inconsistent. I've found that the onesies run big, the fleece and terry sleepers run big, the cotton sleepers run small. Gerber onesies shrink a ridiculous amount, so beware of those.

it also depends on the outfit.  babygirl outgrew her NB onesies a few weeks ago, but there are still a few NB dresses that she can still wear.  and she was 10 lbs 6 oz last friday.
