Mongolian spots?

My daughter has a bunch of mongolian spots on her backside and back/shoulder area that she has had since she was born. I remember asking our pediatrician about them a while ago, and she mentioned that they usually fade when the baby gets older and the skin stretches. However, I've noticed absolutely no improvement so far.

For those who have never heard of this, mongolian spots are basically bluish spots (that can sometimes be confused with bruises) that babies are born with. It has something to do with melanin spots being trapped deep under the skin that appear like bluish spots on the skins surface.

Does anyone else have a child with this? And have you seen any fading or improvement so far?

Re: Mongolian spots?

  • My daughter's Mongolian spots have faded since she was born, but they are still noticeable on her butt.  I'm not worried about it.

  • My DD has two spots on her belly but they haven't faded just stretched with her skin. I had them as a child as well and mine never faded completely until I was 7 or 8. I'm not worried about it.
  • Thanks guys--it never really bothered me before, especially since most of the darkest ones are on her bottom and no one ever sees them, but she does have a few lighter ones on her shoulder/back area that you can see when she is wearing her swimsuit (maybe 2-3 inches in diameter, but light). Last week, one of the other mom's at swim class asked me what happened and how DD got that big bruise (not in a mean way at all, just inquiring)--I explained what it was, but still felt kind of bad.

My husband is Asian (I am caucasian), and I understand that certain nationalities have significantly ncreased chances the baby having these spots, and tried to ask his mother if he had them as a child and when they went away. She says she does not even remember. :-(

  • DD has 3 of them right about her butt. They haven't changed since she was born and I'm not worried about it. I do wonder if anyone ever sees them if they will mistake them for bruises but it's no big deal...no one ever sees her butt anyway

  • I wonder why they're usually on their butt. ??

  • My DDs have lightened up since birth, but they are still there. Just like you, my DH is Asian. if I look close enough at his butt I can still see his Mongolian spots. I've heard the spots fad, but they can always be there. My pedi mentioned to me if DD is ever seen by any other doctor(pedi or specialist) that I should always mention the Mongolian spots since not all doctors "are educated about Mongolian spots". I thought that was pretty good advice since the spots look like bruises.
  • My sisters are both Asian and have had Mongolian spots right above their butts their whole lives.  My older sister has three kids, and sure enough they all have a slightly-yellowed spot right above their butts too.  I don't know if they will fade (I haven't really looked at my sisters' butts in a while) but as far as I understand it, it's characteristic of Asian skin.

  • DS has one and it has faded some but it wasn't super dark to start with.

  • I am Asian and my Mongolian spot has faded.  My daughter is biracial and hers is barely noticeable.  They will fade by age 5 or 6.
  • My son has a mongolian spot just above his butt.  At first I thought it was a bruise, but when it didn't heal I thought it might be something else.

I would recommend anyone who's child has them to mention it to a caregiver or non-pedi doctor so no one get's the wrong idea about it.

I'm not sure why my son has the spot.  Neither my husband, myself or my siblings had one.  My side of the family is Hispanic, but DS is only 1/8th Hispanic.

I'm not worried about it though, since it should fade.  But if it doesn't no one will see it.

I have no idea how long it will take to fade since my son is only 3 months old.
