Breast feeding fail! Please encourage...

I can't catch a break!  Because of the medicine to help increase my milk, and the medicine to get rid of my thrush, my liver levels are elevated!  My dr. wants me to get off both.  So basically I am destined to pain while only breastfeeding a tiny bit to my baby.

 I'm discouraged!

I've tried fenugreek, blessed thistle, mother's love, domperidone, pumping, supplementation system, and power pumping. Domperidone is the only one that seemed to work.

I was told by my lactation consultant that if my baby only gets four ounces, that's an antibiotic.  But is it worth it?

  • Breastfeeding is full of ups and downs like you wouldnt believe, but even after all of my problems that I've had from day one, I say that it is SO worth everything you go through.  Right now I don't get sleep and I'm pretty certain that LO has dairy sensitivity and I can't eat my favorite food (cheese!!!) but all I do is think of how much easier it is to feed her with me rather than mix up bottles in the middle of the night and I am re-encouraged.

Are you not allowed to have your LO on your nipple?  Letting LO suckle even when not eating all day helps a TON with supply.  Skin to skin contact also helps if you've been pumping for your milk, so I'd encourage letting LO take a nap on your chest in just a diaper.   Try to de-stress a bit also, if you can (I know it's hard).  Reducing stress does WONDERS on supply.

Another thing you could try for milk, eating wise, is oatmeal.  I put chocolate syrup in mine to make it yummy.  Even if the oats dont help, the chocolate helps morale!

  • Thank you so much.  I totally think it is worth it.  I love holding him and seeing him eat and stop to smile.  Melts my heart.  My lactation consultant called me back and said to stop taking my thrush med and she found out I was taking ibuprofen for the evil pain so she said to stop both and see if that helps.  Both can elevate liver levels so that may be my problem right there.  Not domperidone.  I definitely will start more skin to skin.  Great idea!

  • In addition to the pps advice I drink a guiness each night since I've read before thar it will help to increase milk. I don't know if it really works or not bit I certainly appreciate the relaxing effects it has on me. I'll second the nudist naps on your chest - they are so relaxing and calming and I always get that letdown feeling.

Guiness works well for me and it helped my cousin also.

  • Allow me to be unpopular....as somebody who suffered plenty trying to BF my DS, I do NOT think it is worth it.  I chose to FF DD, and I am far happier than I ever dreamed of with DS.  So is she.  Not being in pain, not killing myself to improve supply, not going through all the struggle of BFing just to see very minimal returns (or even harm) were absolutely not worth it.  I don't believe there are many benefits that would make the suffering that he and I experienced worthwhile.

I read a great blog - fearlessformulafeeder.blogspot.com - that is very supportive of BFing full or part time while recognizing that sometimes it doesn't go as planned.  I think it would be helpful for you.

  • i hate to be a *** and i know i will get flamed but remember not to take advice on breastfeeding from anyone that has "failed" (for lack of a better word). Sounds like your lc is on top of things and at least if you do end up switching to formula you know you at least tried to bf and in the end it just matters that your babe is being fed.

remember to relax while feeding it helps a lot Smile
