DS has to have a circumcision revision under general anesthesia! Basically the Dr. who originally did it didn't take enough off and now he gets adhesions, etc. I didn't really want to have him go through this, but Dr. says "he can't stay in an in-between state. He needs to be circumcised or not". I know it is not life or death, but I am SO SCARED for DS to have to go under general anesthesia! That being said, I obviously don't want him awake either. Has anyone else had to do this?
Re: Circumcision Revision...
do you mind my asking what made them/you decide to have a revision? My DH and I feel like Bear has too much loose skin on the bottom/underneath part. His doctor says it's fine, but it doesn't look right to me. I know it's weird to think like this, but I dont' want him to have issues when becoming intimate as an adult.
He has exactly that. Basically from the time it healed there was a lot of thin loose skin (mainly underneath the tip) that we would have to "pull back" each time we changed and wiped him. Our pediatrician said that over his first year we'd keep an eye on it, but that most likely it would go away as he and "it" grew. Well at around 10 months he developed an adhesion (the skin just fused itself to the tip but wasn't keeping him from urinating so not anything serious). By the time he was 18 months our pediatrician told us that we could see a pediatric urologist to asses it further. I am embarrassed to say that I waited until just yesterday for our appointment (this current pregnancy had me SO SICK I couldn't physically do it until then). The Dr. recommended a "re-do" because of the adhesions and then amount of thin loose skin. He said that it doesn't "have" to be done but that DS would probably be happier in the long run. I'm not sure how your insurance works, but with ours we didn't need a referral slip so I just made an appointment with a ped urologist at our nearest children's hospital. If you do need a referral I'm sure your ped would give you one to at least have him evaluated
Basically DH and I decided that since we had him circumcised it should look that way and not "in-between". Of course, now we are worried about the same thing happening with this next one :-/
Thanks for the info. That sounds exactly like what his looks like. Please update me after the surgery. I really think we need to have Bear's redone also
DS had a circumcision revision under general anesthesia on April 1st of this year. He was just a few days over one year old. I was pretty upset about the whole thing but this was our experience:
I still nurse him so I was allowed to nurse him up to four hours before the surgery. He couldn't have any solids 12 hours before his surgery but he could have clear liquids up to two hours before hand. His check in time was 6:00am so thankfully he didn't have to be up for too long without eating. We checked in and they brought us back. They checked his blood pressure, pulse and temp and made sure he hadn't shown any signs of illness. They asked us the regular check in questions and the anesthesiologist came in and talked with us about everything that would happen. They would put the mask over his face to get him to sleep and then do the IV. About 30 minutes before it was time for him to go back to the operating room they gave him something called Versed (pronounced like ver said). In about 10 minutes he pretty much looked like he was high. He was very relaxed and content from it, I guess it makes the fact that they are being taken from you easier on them. I of course was bawling like a baby but after the Child Life Specialist came back out of the room she came and told me he did great and that he just sat on the bed looking around and then fell asleep, no crying whatsoever. It took about 45 minutes and then the doctor came out and told us everything went great. He had 20 sutures all around the head and they had given him what was called a codal block (don't know the spelling) which is sorta like an epidural injection in the nerves for that area that kept it numb for about 12 hours. When we went back to his recovery room he was laying in the big tall crib bed and watching Disney Channel. He had his IV in and the blood pressure cuff and the pulse thing on his toe. He was fine until he saw us and then he cried to be held and they did let us pick him up. I'd say about 2 hours after his surgery we got to go home and he was eating goldfish crackers on the way home. He was up and playing almost immediately when we got home. They gave us Tylenol with codeine for the pain which he wouldn't take. He actually wouldn't even take his regular tylenol because I think he thought we were trying to give him the yucky tasting stuff still, so he didn't have any pain medicine after the block wore off. The doctor said he could have a shower after 72 hours and a bath after one week and the sutures would dissovle in 4-6 weeks. We also had to put antibiotic ointment on it after ever diaper change for the first two weeks. At first it bothered him when we did that but I'd say after about 5-7 days he didn't mind that either. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks of recovery and it doesn't bother him one bit. Good luck! It's hard but it really wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting (apart from having to hand him over for them to take him to the operating room that is!).
Thank you SO MUCH for that detailed description!
I know I am going to have such a hard time handing him over. I think I'm more worried about handing him over to the Drs. then the actual surgical part of it all. He just started to say Mama and all I can picture is him screaming Mama as I desperately drag myself out of the room. Hopefully he gets that med you spoke of. I'm glad to hear your LO is recovering well though. After all is said and done DS is not going to be happy about the no bath for a week rule. He has a bath every night because he love love loves them!
DS loves his bath as well! We actually waited about 2 and a half weeks to give him his first just because he loves to pull on it when he's in the bath so we wanted to make sure the sutures were a bit more healed in case we couldn't catch his hand in time. He spent a good 2 minutes straight kicking and splashing when he got in it! Definitely ask for the Versed. I asked two different anesthesiologists if there were any dangerous side effects and neither of them could list one. They gave it to him the same way you'd give infant Tylenol so no needle for that either. Also, make sure to have his favorite drink and easy snack available for afterward. DS wanted to nurse for quite awhile when he saw me so I think he was pretty hungry/thirsty, and of course just wanted comfort. Oh, I also was wondering if he would get sick from the general anesthesia because my husband gets extremely sick from it and they said that there is always a chance but it is very rare for a child to get sick from it. Good luck!!
You do not need to re-do it. That doctor is using some very unethical tactics telling you that it's all or nothing. Circumcision is all guesswork- and there is no definition of a perfect circumcision - it's a cosmetic judgement call that can be sexually damaging if your son's penis grows considerably in adolescence... making that call on a baby is totally impossible.
I had a boyfriend who had pubic hair up to his circumcision scar. Of course I'm sure that his mother and doctor thought he had a wonderful circumcision... but they never saw him with an erection after he had pubes. Just because it looks like you'd expect as an infant- does not mean it's a "good circumcision" and just because it doesn't look like you'd expected it would does not mean that you need to re-do it.
There is NO medical evidence backing what your doctor is saying. NONE. There is no reason why you need to submit your baby to that... and there are several reasons why you would be better to avoid it. Ask that doctor for some evidence based information about why your child needs another circumcision.
Here is a link to a website of a doctor with some pictures of boys - depicting how the look of their circumcision changed over time- this link goes direct to photos with penises.
