Tell me about Lovenox

According to our WTF yesterday, my RE wants me to take these shots after our ET.  I know nothing about this med.

I have been tested for blood clotting and RPL, everything came back normal.  My RE did mention that he is always re-testing RPL too (whatever that means).  I just can't take baby aspirin, as I have asthma and asthmatics cannot take aspirin as it, at least for me, tightens up my chest.

So, what can you tell me about it?  I wonder if my RE is just giving me Lovenox to replace baby aspirin...hmmmm???

Note:  I will be calling my RE this afternoon, just wanted your ladies opinion/knowledge.

Re: Tell me about Lovenox

  • It is an injectable blood thinner. I was on it when the OHSS got really bad last time. They were worried I would throw a blood clot since I was so dehydrated.

It's expensive, it wasn't covered by my insurance, it burns going in and leaves giant bruises. It sucks.

I'm so sorry they are adding it to your protocol but I hope it does what it's supposed to for you.

It is my understanding that Lovenox works a little differently than BA.  Something about BA making blood thinner and Lovenox interfering with clotting.  But, I'm not sure about the exact difference.

I was found to have clotting issues.  So, I take both BA and Lovenox.  I start Lovenox early on because the other medications increase the chance of clotts forming.  I start BA after ER.  I do notice that once I start BA the bruises from Lovenox get bigger.

Lovenox burns when injected.  If you inject it slower, it doesn't burn as much.  It also leaves bruises.  So make sure not to inject near where your waist band will be!!

    Good luck!

ETA - I'm sorry that BA causes you problems.  I have asthma too, but it doesn't seem to affect it.

  • I take lovenox starting two days prior to transfer.  I have two clotting disorders.  PP's are right....it does sting going in.  I try to ice the injection spot for a few minutes beforehand and it seems to help.

    Good luck!!

    lovenox burns like a mother

ice prior to injection and inject very slowly

in general, lovenox is given to patients with clotting disorders. it thins the blood and prevents clots from forming during pregnancy

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.
MTHFR A1298C & C677T, Immune Issues and Factor II
  • I took it starting with the stims, and I am still doing it now. I found generic Lovenox, btw, so keep this in mind in case insurance doesn't cover the namebrand. I actually prefer Lovenox to Heparin, it seems to sting less. I didn't get any bruising either by some miracle, but we inject it very slowly.

  • My Heme explained to me that aspirin is for arterial blood and lovenox is for venous blood.  Not sure if that makes sense.

There is a generic and it is comparable per my heme, but my prescription mail order place says it isn't an A/B generic (or something like that).  I had been filling my prescription locally one month at a time and getting the generic.  Then I sent it to the mail order and they sent me the Lovenox (not generic) and charged my 9 times as much.  Just a heads up!!!!!!!!!

Also, I used to ice all the time like others have said, but then went out of town for work and didn't ice a few days and found there was no difference for me personally between icing and not icing. (just for perspective!)

  • I don't ice like some of the pp's & it really doesn't hurt that bad...especially compared to PIO. The bruises are horrible!!

I have found that the needles to the generic are not quite as sharp so they hurt a little more going in. I was on generic until I met my deductible & now Im getting the name brand. Huge difference.

    Good luck!
