He's 16 m/o. I stupidly let him play with the plastic (clear) cover of a thermometer (the kind that you put under your arm. He crunched the end with his teeth and I immediately swept a larger piece of the broken plastic out of his mouth. I saw there was another smaller piece missing and swept the back of his throat with my finger and felt it on his tongue. It was way back there. I pulled my finger out to try again because he pulled away from me, and within an instant he had swallowed it.
He didn't cry or anything and has eaten and drank. I called the nurse on duty at our small hospital and she said it should be fine, but to watch for any signs of problems, but it would most likely pass in his bm.
Has anyone had this happen? The piece is about the size of a pencil eraser and has a pointy side on it. I can't help but worry!
Re: My son swallowed a small piece of sharp plastic
Accidents happen.
I think you need a second opinion on this: that piece sounds big for tiny intestines. I'm not a doc and haven't had this happen, but that's my intuition.
Thanks so much everyone. I called the ER doc and he said they do not scope for things like this. We have to make sure he's eating and drinking and watch for any signs of pain (and would go in immediately if he shows problems). He said if we don't find it in his BM within 48 hours we have to go in.
I appreciate your input!
If it makes you feel any better, we found a STAPLE in his diaper. It was an un-used staple: the sides weren't laying down. It didn't seem to do any damage.
That is definitely scary, though! I can't wait til these kids get out of their everything in the mouth stage!
Around your LOs age Ds got a hold of t our cats toy, and swallowed the plastic tip off.
I called poision control who said that, its not a poision but a choking hazard. I needed to look for signs of distress, but otherwise it would pass in a BM.
Now - all the animal toys are in our bedroom, away from little toddler hands.
