Babies: 3 - 6 Months

calorie sprinkles. (Bad appointment)

DD isn't growing. Like, at all.

When she was born she was in the 5% for weight.. she was hanging on there for 2 months. At 4 months she fell off that curve and insisted we started her on cereal to help her gain weight. Today we went in for a weight check and she only gained 2oz in 4 weeks Sad . They said she's now below 1% in weight and her height is now falling off the curve too.

So we have to start adding some formula powder to her bottles. Although, the doctor said not to look at it as adding formula, she said to look at it as adding calorie sprinkles to her breastmilk. haha. This is why I love our pedi! She knew I was set on EBF and really reluctant to start formula, so even tho its stupid, the "calorie sprinkles" comment did make me feel a little bit better.

The part thats scary is that the pedi said she really doesn't think its going to make a difference. She said the amounts that DD is eating really should be enough and that she should be growing. She said she's really worried about her because it doesn't look like its a calorie intake issue. She said we'd try the formula for 2 weeks and if theres not a major improvement she's going to have to send her for bloodwork and more "invasive tests". I didn't ask exactly what that meant.

Ugh, I really hope she starts growing and the formula helps. I guess I have to take my EBF badge down now Sad

  • I hope she picks up weight soon.  She doesn't look small in your siggy.  She is beautiful BTW.
  • Aww i hope the formula is the answer and not anything more serious. Keep us posted!

  • Hang in there!

I was 3lbs when I was born and was not on the growth curve for years.  My childhood pedi was satisfied if I gained anything between appointments.  My mom didn't start me on solids until I was a year old and I ate so little she was convinced I was anemic.  Blood tests showed that I was perfectly healthy, I was just small.  Just sharing to hopefully make you feel better.  I turned out just fine (or so I think Stick out tongue).

  • thanks ladies! DH and I aren't big people, so her being tiny isn't a huge surprise. She was consistantly gaining approx 1lb per month, which I'm told is on the low side of normal, but she was pretty much keeping up. This month she only gained 2oz and that was with the addition of cereral... thats why they're now thinking it might be more than her just being a generally tiny baby.

  • Mom of an older child who fell down the charts chiming in here. I would skip the cereal at this age and stage. The amount of calories in cereal is so minimal--nursing more frequently might be what she needs. (Not saying there's anything wrong with cereal, but in this case perhaps providing her with all the calories she needs via breastmilk might be helpful). I  would also ask your ped about Duocal instead of formula to add to your breast milk.

  • I would think cereal would fill her up faster and make her eat LESS actually. My LO has been kickin it on the 3rd percentile ( briefly fell off) since birth and generally gains barely a pound a month. Our pedi isn't worried. Here's hoping your LO is just petite! PS- I wasn't on the charts until age 2 and always gained ounces rather than pounds btwn appts. I was 16 lbs at one year. And I'm fine!

First of all, Elaina is gorgeous! I was just showing your siggy pic to my Fi earlier because I think it's so cute :)

Good luck with adding formula. I was originally set on EBF as well, but when Amelia lost a pound in 2 weeks, I had to start supplementing. Now she's doing great. Here's hoping that's all Elaina needs so that she doesn't have to go through the testing, whatever it may be. Good luck again; I'll be thinking of you both!

  • This happened to a friend of mine and it turned out that her breastmilk was low in fat content. Once they started supplementing with formula his weight picked up. Good luck and leave that badge right where it is :)
