VBAC

Financial benefits of a VBAC

Last time, DS's birth (for the c/s as well as both of our hospital stays) was over 24 thousand dollars.  Thank God we had 'Cadillac' insurance at the time through DH's employer, as we didn't have to pay a dime.  This time, unless there are more bills to come in, the cost between DS & my bills for our completely natural VBAC were a little over 5k - which is great, as this time we are paying a percentage.

Re: Financial benefits of a VBAC

  • With my "cadillac" insurance, it doesn't matter VBAC/C-section.  I'll pay around $3k out of pocket.

  • It definitely makes a difference with our insurance. We will pay 20% of the cost of one or the other, and with the C/S being about 20K more than a vaginal birth, it would save us at least $4K. That's nothing to shake a stick at!

i'm actually paying more for my VBAC!  it's not entire because of the VBAC itself, but because my max OOP went up when my plan changed to "family" after I added my c/s daughter to it.

deductible + max OOP when I had my C/S was $1500 (individual, husband and I carry different policies so I was not "family" prior)

deductible + max OOP is now $3000 (family)

sidenote:  i thought it was pretty funny when I went in for my 6wk pp visit and I owed around $100 over what I had already paid.  i asked what it was for and the patient accounts lady said it was b/c the VBAC delivery costs more than vaginal. apparently its more expensive for a baby to come out of your vagina when you've got a scar on your uterus.  well worth the extra money, though!

  • I'm actually paying more than if I just decided to have a RCS.  I chose a doctor who is out of network because he was the one I trusted most to support me in a VBAC.  And I'm paying for a doula and childbirth classes (although I might have wanted a doula at a RCS too) so that's an additional $600.  It's ironic how much I'm spending just so my body can have a chance to do what comes naturally.

  • We paid the same for both of our births ($250).  But the bill for my CS was almost $40,000 and the bill for my VBAC was just over $4,000.

  • WOW!!! Honestly, I had no idea. Here it's all covered by the state (meaning, yes, our very high taxes!) and the money is never mentioned. I knew a c/s would be more, but I didn't expect the gap to be so huge. It makes me really glad to be here.

lorry, the gap isn't quite so large here where i live.  i think my c-section rounded out at about 13k, and i think the vag birth was closer to 7k (doctors fees and hospital charges combined)

edit: that's not what i paid, just what the charges were before insurance.

  • Oh, I will admit, I have doula charges to add to that, but since my current ins is 80/20, with a rather high OOP deductible, it still will be less.  Plus, I'm hoping that ins. will reimburse for some of the doula, as BCBS has in the past.  Still waiting to hear on that one, though. If it doesn't happen, that is fine.

Oh - and yes, it is ridiculous that a VBAC is more than a first time Vaginal birth.  I don't *believe* that that is the case for me, although I'm not positive.

  • We pay about $1000 a month out of pocket for family coverage to have the BEST insurance offered. That's just the part we pay..our employer pays the rest. It covers EVERYTHING pregnancy and delivery related. It's awesome if you're having a baby but expensive for everyday insurance. After this baby is born we're planning to lower the insurance to one that will be about $100 out of pocket each month but has percentages that you pay when hospitalized etc. Seeing as I had a failed induction, 7 total days in the hospital and an eventual c/s I'll gladly pay the $1000 a month for now. I dont' even want to know how much it would've been if I had to pay a percentage last time.

  • My c section was about $21,000.  We owe $3,500.  It sucks.  We have an 80/20 plan.
  • I also have an 80/20 plan with $7k out of pocket max.  I have already mentally considered this "an out of pocket year" as was the same the year DS was born.  And yes, I work for a large, nationwide company and this is the best insurance I can get.  thank you corporate america.

For DS and I, our hospital bills were about $165k (c-section, 6 day stay for me, 6 days in NICU for him), and at that time out out of pocket max was $9k, so yeah that is what we paid for his birth.  If we need anything done medically, this is the year to do it!
