Just saw a quick snippet of Extreme Couponing where a woman was literally dumping an entire floor bin of pain reliever into her cart because it was on sale for $1.99 and she had a manufacturer coupon for $2.50 off each one. She said she was going to MAKE $0.51 on each bottle.
So, if you have a coupon for more than the product costs, you actually get money back???
Re: Question for Couponers...
Some stores credit the overage to your bill, so if you have acoupon that gives a credit of .50 and buy a candy bar for .55 you only owe .05.
I did it this week at Albertsons, had a coupon for $1.00 and used a doubler, but my crackers were only 1.49, so it covered part of my bananas. lol
They call it a money-maker.
It depends on the store. Some will do it; others won't. I have gotten overage, as they call it, at Target and Walmart, but a clerk once had a huge fit at Safeway because I had a $1 coupon for a $.99 item and she refused to take it.
I bought formula the other day at Target and got a bunch of overage because it was marked down to $3.86 a quart and I had $5 coupons. I was able to buy a couple extra containers with the overage and still not have to pay anything.

Yeah I know. I just can't get enough energy to try to deal with it. I added Krazy Coupon Lady to my FB to see what all she has to say, but I can't really get excited about it.
Okay, now I have another question... These people have so many coupons (one lady has a whole room!). Are they actually using them all before they expire? I can't believe that with 100 milk crates full of coupon inserts. It would be a full time job just keeping up with that, let alone finding new ones and actually shopping.
This sh!t blows my mind.

It is fun, but time consuming to a point. Free and super cheap is great! Today I scored floss, mens nivea body wash, toy story connect 4, and 2 bottles of hot sauce for $3.
Speaking of that episode ... read this.

That woman totally committed coupon fraud. It's insane.
Oh, and I only have one set of coupons a week, MAYBE two if the coupons are good and I ask DH to grab the Sunday News Tribune he gets at work (they recycle it otherwise).
These are the couponers who have a serious problem. It's like an OCD issue IMO. Spending hours and hours a day and hoarding things they don't need. It's a sickness. There's a big difference between being thrifty and hoarding.
Definitely hoarding. I just saw one where the woman had every single closet full of crap, 1400 rolls of TP under her 2 year old's bed, and a huge industrial shelving unit in her bedroom! Why are these people still shopping at all when they have so much stuff already??
Oh, THAT'S the woman?? I saw that when you posted on FB last week. Interesting.
Oh, and I loved the part when she was talking about how her image was really important to her and that she must look like she has a lot of money. Must be the bright purple eye shadow and multi-color rat's nest hair.

Screw you, Michelle. I totally bust out the Alluring Violet Wet n' Wild and the Aquanet when I go to buy formula. Only the best for the Lakewood Tarjay.

I have been using coupons for the past six months, but I am not a fan of Extreme Couponing. It is not realistic at all and basically presented in a way to be as sensational as possible rather than helpful. I still can't believe that one gal committed fraud with coupons on TV...talk about ballsy! But what do you expect from a somebody who feels it necessary to add an apostrophe to a perfectly normal name (J'aime).
Anyhow, it is possible to get overage at some stores if their coupon policies allow for it. Rite Aid is where I experience this the most often. In the case referred to above, there was an Excedrine PM coupon out for $2.50 off a few months back, and it was on sale at Rite Aid for $1.99. So it became a money maker because RA will allow you to use the .51 towards something else. Another way something can be a "money maker" is if you get some sort of register reward like many drug stores do. For example this past weekend I bought 4 bottles of Nivea body wash at Rite Aid. They were $3.99 each and I had 4 $3 off coupons. Plus if I spent $15 on Nivea products I got $5 in register rewards that could be used towards a future purchase. So I spent about $4 and got $5 off my next purchase. If you roll rewards from purchase to purchase you can often end up spending next to nothing for many drug store type items.
In terms of newspapers, I will usually buy 3-4 copies of the Tacoma News Tribune at the dollar store. I do not clip my coupons. Instead I file them in a notebook, and if I come across a deal that I want to use them for I'll clip them at that time. At $1 per paper, I only need to get that amount in savings to break even, which is not hard to do when there are usually 2-4 coupon inserts per paper. Also I get the News Tribune because there is a better selection of inserts than the Seattle Times. I also get coupons online, but I only print them in advance if it is for a product that I know I will use and/or is very high value. For example, Lysol had a $1.50 coupon on their facebook page yesterday, which got me free Lysol wipes at Rite Aid.
I don't spend hours on clipping coupons. I don't go to tons of different stores each week. I only follow one drug store's deals because while you can save a lot the deals can get complicated. If I do it in moderation and in combination with meal planning (so that I don't buy what I don't need) it saves me quite a bit of money which is good with DH's unemployment running out next month. Plus when you get something for free, it is hard not to feel good about that!

This. I too am a proud Frugalista - but I think the coupon craze has gotten out of control. I deleted most of my FB alerts and unjoined nearly all of those "daily deal" sites. IMO if you weren't ALREADY going to buy it, a coupon is not a good deal. It's like "winning" an Amazon bid - you didn't win, you paid. I think if you added up your time (which should account for something) and gas and wear and tear on car, these extremers might not be getting such a good deal in the end. Too bad they can't donate their mad skillz to food banks.
Oh, and I did once get cash back on something I had a coupon for. I think it was just a lazy cashier, but it was awesome.
This is a source of irritation to me because I am an avid couponer. I do it for my family, and also for the food bank, so I have looked into this. Kroger will double ANY coupon up to $1, but they don't have Kroger in Washington, just stores that SELL Kroger. Some Safeway stores will double, but the only ones in Washington are in the Southwest area of the state, i.e. down by Vancouver. The best we can do is Albertson's doublers once in a while, and I also am a big fan of Target because you can stack their coupons with a manufacturer's coupon, which could actually end up being a better deal than doubles in some cases.
Love this about Target. They will also price match competitor stores (walmart) which is awesome when deals are so good all Walmarts are sold out.
Today I got 3 Toy Story Operation games for $0.27 out of pocket, I had a $7. Target credit.
YES. I used to only go to Walmart (the one in Lakewood is nicer than the Target), but have found that Target is a much better deal on some things. In fact, CNN showed a price comparison between the two that was run on a cart full of items a few weeks ago and Target was actually the victor. I think that the heat Walmart has put on its competitors has forced Target to be more lenient in its return policy, match prices, etc. I'm a fan.
