Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Newborn feeding/changing question

With your newborn do you feed them and then change their diaper or change their diaper than feed them?

I'm having a problem with this because I prefer to change his diaper then feed him because it's easier to put him to sleep this way (he screams throughout his diaper change) however often feeding him causes him to poop so I have to change him again after some feedings anyways.

Also do any of your babies cough and choke while breastfeeding? I feel so bad when this happens to DS

  • Feed then change and hope she doesn't wake up.

  • I try to change him first in case he wants to fall asleep afterward. Sometimes if he is STARVING and gnawing at my arm, I'll feed him first and then change his diaper if he stays awake. My DS isn't pooping like yours probably is though. I try to change his wet diapers every 2 hours when I feed him, however since he only poops once a day, I can let him go if he falls asleep. Your baby is probably pooping all the time, right?

The coughing and choking is probably one of two things. Either:

1.) Your milk probably just came in not too long ago since he's only a week old. He's just getting used to it.

     or

2.) You have a forceful letdown (which I do too). My milk flows out way too fast and causes my DS to cough and choke and pull off. Then he spits up a lot afterward. Since your still so early into breastfeeding I'd wait a few weeks to see if that was the case. Check out www.kellymom.com and search if you want to know more or for tips to help slow the milk down.

  • He will grow out of the screaming through diaper changes soon I bet. I went through the same thing very early and it didn't last very long.?

I usually feed then change but my daughter pees as soon as she is done eating. ?

  • Usually change, then feed. But we also check her diaper after eating to make sure we're not putting her down with a dirty diaper, because that will just wake her up again.

DD did choke/cough in the beginning while bf, but it has gotten better because she pulls herself off before it gets too bad.

  • I change him then feed him, but if he is fussy then I will feed him first then change him. My DS will sometimes cough and choke during feeding ( I BF), I have a pretty fast let down and so I will pull him off for about 30 seconds to give him a chance to breathe and will let my milk run into a burp cloth.

  • When DD was first born, I changed her first because it was the only way I could wake her up enough to eat.

Even though she eats on demand now I still usually change her before she eats. It just became a habit.

  • I was changing then feeding. It helped ?to wake him up. Now we are less strict about it.?
  • When DD was a newborn, I changed then fed.  And if she pees immediately after, then I changed again.  Changing her before feeding helped wake her up.
  • I usually feed, then change - EXCEPT in the middle of the night.  Then I always change first, and hope for the best (that she doesn't need another diaper change after she eats).  this gets her back to sleep the fastest.
  • When she was first born changed than fed. If she pooped while or after eating we changed again.

Now I just change her around every 1-2 hours. During the middle of the  night with her 1 feeding I will change her 1/2 way through her feeding.

  • I change first and then feed and then sometimes change in b/t breasts to wake her up and if I know she's peed/pooped.  I will change her afterward if I heard some "commotion" while eating.

She does choke, but I figure its b/c she's eating too fast.  I don't worry about it b/c she always pulls off her own and doesn't spit up at all.

  • I usually change her right before I feed her because it wakes her up for the feed and then she is asleep right after. Of course, if she poops sometimes afterward I change her and rock her back to sleep.

DD does choke and cough while BFing and it is usually a sign of a forceful letdown. Try leaning back in your chair/rocker when you feed or you can express some milk into a towel to slow the flow.
