Success after IF

tummy time

E really hates tummy time, which is new for me because Henry loved it. So we try to have her do it for a few minutes a couple times a day, but she just cries and cries so I don't really force it. When I lay her down she just sort of lays there...she can definitely move her head from side to side with no problem (and appears to have excellent head/neck control when we're holding her upright, burping her, etc.), but she does not push up off the mat. Ever. She sort of makes a feeble attempt to then just gives up, lays down and cries.

Henry was a tummy time machine...pushing up at a couple weeks, rolling onto his back by about six weeks. I'm not sure if that's normal or not, I guess, and whether he was just way ahead or whether I should be considered that she's behind (and by concerned I mean, "hmmm...she should be doing this by now, what's up" NOT "oh my gawd, she's never going to sit/stand/walk/etc!!!!!!!!!!!")

Anyone care to share where your LO was at this stage of the game? We have her 2-month well visit tomorrow so we'll ask the pedi, but I'm just curious.

Re: tummy time

  • I could have written this post myself! Once Reese hit her due date, she loved tummy time (she was a preemie). Grier hates it. It's like she surrenders and just lays there. She will move her head from side to side, but she keeps her arms straight down at her sides. I've had better luck having her do it laying on my chest. And as far as rolling over, she's not behind. It sounds like Henry was just very advanced!

  • D hated tummy time. He would just lay there with his head down and cry. I would put him on my chest and he loved that. So we did more "tummy time" on me then on the floor.

I can not recall his 2 month stats (he was a preemie) but I do know he was a little late in the game turning over. He turned back to belly before belly to back. The doctor was not concerned at any point though since he always had good neck control.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I say she's normal. Both of my boys LOATHE(D) tummy time. We last like 30 seconds and then roll them over...haha. DS1 used to puke his guts up EVERY time, but he spit up a lot. DS2 just gets really angry.

Also, both of my boys could roll tummy to back at about 3 months, so she still has plenty of time. Henry had some tummy time skillz!! :)

  • DS hardly did any true tummy time because he's spit up all over the place.  He spent a lot of time just sitting on my lap or being held to work on his neck strength.  he doesn't seem to be behind because of it....i think your first was super early :)
  • My LO's HATE tummy time!!  Needless to say, I still make them do it.  They do it about 3 or 4 times a day, 10 minutes at time.  The scream the entire time but they're doing really well with it.

  • DD hates tummy time too b/c of her pretty severe A/R, so we really don't do it much at all. I told her pedi & she didn't seem concerned about it. And she sits up & everything sometimes unassisted, but normally propped up. She seems to be hitting all the other milestones on time too, besides back to tummy rolling.
  • Sounds pretty normal to me. My DD didn't roll over until 4 months! Sounds like your son was quite skilled in the tummy time department. :).

    Because we're fancy like that.
