Jewish Bumpies come in...RE: Passover ?s

Ok....even if you aren't Jewish, but know about the challenges of Passover, please help me out.

While DS's school is closed this week my ILs are graciously watching him. They are Kosher and observe Passover, along with all the rules. They are being very lenient with DS and with my lack of creativity and their "under 3" rule (don't know if that's something they made up or an actual observance guideline. That means that they don't mind if certain things are mixed in his food, in our dishes, with our silverware and such....

However, DH wants us to be as respectful as possible in packing DS's food. It is Thursday and I'm hitting a wall. I'm totally out of ideas of what to pack him as finger foods. I can think of a zillion things he can't have. If I scramble one more egg I'm going to scream. What can you put peanut butter on besides bread or crackers? We tried matzo with him, but it was a no go with how hard it is.

Any ideas, suggestions, stories to make me laugh and not pull out my hair? My DH is being little to no help with brainstorming and I'm so frustrated.

TIA

  • I am not Jewish but I have studied Passover a bit. I forget, can you do Pita bread or is that a no no? What about peanut butter and bananas?

Most of the Jewish people I know do something like a 3 and under guideline, since they know kids are picky eaters.

  • Well, I'm heading back to work today (I got two days off this week for Passover!) But since passover is still going on, I have to keep snacks Passover friendly. Today, we are having yogurt pops. Tomorrow, matza. Basically, the rule is nothing with wheat (as I recall) or leavening. You can do rice, but if you do rice, you can't do potatoes. If you do potatoes, you can't do rice.

I forgot that you work at a Jewish School! H's school is closed the entire holiday. My IL's follow the Ashkenazic guidelines, so potatoes are ok, but no rice, legumes, soy, etc.

Is your school Kosher also or no?

Thanks for the potato reminder, that's a good one.

Yah, unfortunately pita is off limits. I'm glad to hear someone else knows the 3 and under rule, that it isn't something my DH's family made up, lol.

Peanut butter on the bananas might work...we've been doing a lot of bananas and fruit since that is a-ok.

  • Here are some ideas:

    matzo brei (https://kidscooking.about.com/od/passoverrecipes/r/matzohbrie.htm)

    Passover pizza https://www.jewishrecipes.org/recipes/passover/pizza/passover-pizza-2.html

    Egg salad

If you google, passover recipes for kids, you will find a lot of ideas

Good luck!!  I fondly remember having matzo peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a kid (if you let the jelly sit on the matzo for a while, it gets softer).

thanks for the ideas, definitely saving those links. I'll have to check out our jellies and preserves and see which one will work for Passover. nice tip about the matzo getting softer. I tried to break off some matzo and give it to him Monday night and he gagged and wouldn't go for it. Unfortunately H doesn't really like to chew much and is a "stuffer." The hardness of matzo is difficult. We have also tried matzo ball soup on many a Friday night and he's just not too into it. The pizza is a great idea...I'm going to try that tonight and see if he'll go for it!

Peanut butter and apples or celery although not sure how well that would go over. But you could do peanut butter on celery with raisins (ants on a log).

I will definitely try ants on a log (loved that when I was a kid)...he won't bit it off though...hopefully will maybe suck the peanut butter off of the celery, instead of choking himself with it. ;) Does Taylor bite off the celery or raw apple? Any suggestions of how to not get him to just shove the whole thing in his mouth without biting it into smaller pieces?

Yes, our school is Kosher. But if someone brings in pork or shellfish we're not all crazy about it. It was so cute today to see how most of the kinder parents are really supporting our request for no bread this week!

  • Maybe try egg matzah. It's a bit softer and a ton tastier. I like it so much better than regular matzah.

ETA: how old is your DS? I give my daughter smoked salmon all the time (lox), she loves it. corn, peas, carrots, green beans, yams, avocados, have you tried gefilte fish and macaroons? Those are generally kosher for pesach. yogurt, kidney beans, chicken, meatballs, are other things she sometimes likes.
