HELP - Puking baby

Help!!   Cooper has puked 4 times since right before dinner.   We have only ever had a puking illness once here, so I have no idea what I should do....

The first time he threw up he had a fork (back end) halfway down his throat so I figured he just gagged himself.  The second time though he just sort of burped up a little puke onto the couch (nice).  But these last two have been real gaggy pukes, so I think I can't pretend it was just a fluke now.  :(

So what are your tips?  Can I do anything to make changing his crib easier if/when he pukes in the night?  I'm thinking of just putting a big beach towel down over his sheet and maybe I should just take the bumper off in advance?  Any good ways of coping with it all night?  When he was sick the one time over Christmas, I ended up sleeping with him for a few hours and we just stripped and I wrapped us up in a beach towel so he could puke on that and I could just wrap it up and toss it in the tub and get another one and go back to sleep.  He's bigger now though - not sure if that will work....

And of course I have a big spa day with a friend tomorrow!  I don't want to cancel.  How long do these pukey bugs normally last?

FWIW, he is acting just fine.

ARGH.

Re: HELP - Puking baby

  • Oh no, that bites.  K had the pukes a while back, part of a diarrhea stomach bug [careful, she graced me with it and I was puking within hours].

Luckily the puking only lasted less then 12 hours for her.  We use the big waterproof pads, and put an extra one in her crib just in case.  That way if she puked those just come up and there's another underneath.  If your beach towel is thick it might work.  We also did lots of snuggles, because the puking freaked her out a bit.

Ped. Associates website just said to keep up clear liquids and avoid food for a while [although that was for under 12 months].  Check their pediatric advisor, it has some good tips.

Good luck!  I hope you get your spa day.

  • Oh, Jill, I'm so sorry. :(  Poor guy.

Lila was really pukey sick a few weeks ago and it was (fortunately) a quick bug.  She puked twice in one day and that was it.  Of course, she barely ate for a week after that.  Hopefully, Cooper's bug will be quick too!

To be safe, I'd probably try the towel thing.  And if you're going to take the bumper out, I'd say put a towel down on the floor too, since the bumper won't be there to block anything from getting out through the slats.

Hopefully you won't need any of it, but it can't hurt to try it if it will make your life easier.

Yep, the towel thing is the best trick.  Once when S was like 10 months or something, we lined the whole floor with towels and I slept on the floor with her and just removed/replaced whatever towels she hit every time.  Since Cooper is older, I'd just line his crib with them (take out the bumper for sure).  Can you up the heat just in his room?  That way you don't have to totally change him every time- just let him sleep in a diaper or button front shirt (easier changes)

If he's not able to keep anything down, try to keep him hydrated.  Even medicine droppers of pedialyte every 20 minutes are good.

One big thing, every cough tonight even if he doesn't cry, could be vomit- I'd check on him a lot before you go to sleep and if he's not throwing up more, fine, but if he keeps it up, you might need to sleep closer to him.

And FWIW- I've had this happen twice ever and both times the kids were super clingy all the next day.  Not sure who he is used to being with him during the day, but even if he's not puking, he might just feel weak and want cuddles all day...

Good luck!  Sending lots of no puke dust and vibes to your house!

  • I still nurse him to sleep at night... do you think that is a bad idea?  I might not have a choice, but I can try to wait til he's about to fall asleep here on the couch so he conks out fast.  (Yes he's still awake)...

Oh I so hope no one else gets this!!!  Ben will be a wreck if he starts puking.  He's so oversensitive right now, puking will freak him out.

BM is the best for him right now- antibodies from you, snuggles with mama, and lots of nutrients- and easy to digest!  Absolutely nurse him if he'll keep it down.

When S had that bug when she was little, dr rec'd also medicine dropping breastmilk if she'd take it.  GL GL GL!

  • My girls had a stomach bug a couple months ago and then Hayden had it again the other week.  In both cases I stopped offering them liquids for a few hours after the puked.  This may not be a doctor recommended approach, but I find that if I keep giving them fluids they keep puking it up (that's how it works with me too).  However if I give their systems a break and then give them pedialyte after they haven't puked for a couple hours then it seems to stay down.  Now I wouldn't go very long like that for fear of them getting dehydrated.  But if it is just a few hours it isn't a big deal.

As for sleep, I ended up letting them sleep on me until liquids seemed to be staying down again.  And I kept a towel close by!

  • Well he fell asleep on the couch in just his diaper so I went and put him in bed - he stayed asleep...

He hasnt' had anything at all since he puked up the little bit of water in his tummy, so I'm hoping since he's all emptied out he might be able to sleep a bit.

Of course now I am worried I'm feeling yucky.  I tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac though sometimes.  So I'm hoping I'm just being a nut.   I want my spa day tomorrow!!!!!!!

  • E had the flu a while ago, and they said to keep nursing her if she wants to. I tried the little bit of fluids every 30 mins or whatever they said, but she threw up every time, so I just gave her a break and let her decide if she wanted anything. B/c she was so little I was giving spoon-fulls of pedialyte, but at C's age if he asks for anything you could just give a sippy of a couple ounces of pedialyte at a time if he can keep it down. Anyway, my point is, we had better luck just letting her ask for what she wanted and when instead of trying to do any kind of schedule. She seemed to improve a lot faster that way.

  • Last time Max was in for throwing up they said no dairy for 24 hours after the last time he's thrown up, and try just one sip at a time of a clear liquid, then wait 15 minutes, then another sip, etc. I hope he is better this morning!

  • Well last night wasn't too awful. I saw him throw up a little at 11 but he didn't even really wake up so I was able to deal with it quickly. Then around 1:30 he was dry heaving so I went in and slept with him. He nursed and puked it all up but then we slept til 6. He nursed then and then wanted to get up. Ugh. He's sitting on the couch now and he wants water. I hope letting him drink more isn't a disaster. Thanks for all of your help last night!

  • When a few kids I was watching were sick, we were super hesitant to give them liquids, even though they asked for them. (All were throwing up).

I don't really know how old C is, but if you set a timer for like.. 15-20 min, would he think it was "fun" to drink a medicine cup full of water each time it went off? (Like the ones on top of cough syrup bottles) We did this with this kids, but they were like.. 2 and 5.

They thought it was neat to listen for the timer to go off, drink the little bit of water, and wait for the timer again. It got their mind off being sick, and kept little bits of water in their systems.

    Hope he feels better soon!!

  • He's only 18 months so the timer thing is probably past him. I really didn't want him to drink water but he was insistent. So far it has stayed down.

  • Let him drink water, it will flush the nasty toxin out of his system faster and he will not get dehydrated.
  • I'm a bit late, but when Em had puking in January I went back to just nursing for a day.  They can digest the breastmilk quicker, so even if she threw up again she was getting some liquid/nutrition.  She wanted lots of snuggles anyway.

I kept some bowls near us where ever we where and tried to contain anything that came up.  Also put down receiving blankets on the bed to change out if she threw up overnight.

Hope you get your spa day and that Cooper feels better soon.
