GD- agave nectar

anyone use agave nectar as a sugar replacement vs sugar free substitutes?

i'm trying to stay with more "natural" alternatives this time around and have heard agave is better for not spiking insulin levels but wanted to see if any other GD moms have tried it and how it affected your #s.

Re: GD- agave nectar

  • I haven't, but since it's derived from fruit I would imagine it will affect your numbers in a similar way. Something to ask the dietitian about, I'd be curious what they say.

  • I had asked my diabetic nurse educator about it and she told me to avoid it since it is relatively new to the market and not really researched in pregnant women.  Her recommendation was to stick with splenda if possible.  But just like everything else with GD, every practitioner is different.

  • ugh. how annoying that they'd prefer you stick with something artificial vs something 100% natural.

i'm not officially diagnosed yet, but expect to be with my next glucose test since i had it with ds.
