Preemies

when did your preemie catchup?

My DS is already caught up, he is now over 10lb at 3 months, born at 32w5d at 4lb 12 oz.

Obviously I am ecstatic, but now I am concerned that he will be gaining too much from here on out.  Do preemies just try to catch up and then slow down once they have?  Also, once your preemie caught up, were they hitting their actual age milestones at that point?  TIA

(my dd is still behind, now weighing over 8, born at 3lb 14oz, but they both seem to be hitting milestones at the same time.  Both rolled over at 2 1/2 months actual, and both are just now real smiling this week.)

Re: when did your preemie catchup?

  • my son was born at 31.4 weeks and 3lb 5oz, hes 3 months 2weeks now and weighs 11lbs. he still hasnt rolled over but can lift his head for tummy time above shoulders and he smiles here and there. the physical therapist at the nicu gave me a paper for average age and normal ranges for milestones. example socail smiling is at average age is 5-6 weeks and the normal range is 1-3 months. my ds adjusted age is 1month 2 weeks and hes had his first smile on 4/1/2011. another example on the paper is rolling front to back: average age 4 months normal range is 3-6 months ( so it sounds like your little ones are ahead of the game) :)

  • My preemie hit the actual charts for weight and height in Sept of 2010, so at 17 months adjusted age.   Now, I'm not sure that his weight is still on but his height definitely is.

Developmentally he was caught up to his adjusted age at 1 yr adjusted, then lagged, and now is measuring much behind in all areas.  He's almost 28 months old and measuring 16 mo in gross motor (starting PT soon, again), 19 in fine motor (with a lot of therapy) and much speech delayed. He is still not and never has been anywhere near caught up to his actual age.

I'd say for us there was not correlation between hitting the charts in size vs. development.

This exactly.  DS was "caught up" by 2 months - as in 50% for height and weight...though he was actually on the charts around the 5% at birth (34 weeker).  Although he was gaining a TON of weight - averaging 1-2oz a day for the first two months or so, he did slow down and found his normal growth pattern and now is around the 25% or so which is probably about right given DH and my height and sizes as toddlers.

He "caught up" and is actually now ahead on speech at 18 months, has been ahead on social for quite a while and is WAY behind on gross motor - maybe around 10-11 months or so (he gets PT regularly, but won't be reevaluated until 2), and is at the very low end of his adjusted age range for fine motor so is being monitored monthly for OT.

  • My preemie was 27 wks, 4 days. 2 lbs 8 oz

She was caught up by her first birthday for physical growth but she was extreemly verbal early.  Talking in sentences by then.

Yes this!! Nolan just caught up size wise but has been hitting all the developmental milestones much quicker.

  • lo (30wkr) is almost 11 months, and is 19 pounds. He is in the 25% for his actual age and 50% for his adjusted(in both height/weight). He is very active/mobile, and compared to my 35wk niece who was born 5 days after him, he does a lot more than she does; however, i think all preemies differ with milestones, and it is hard to tell. like pp some catch up faster, and some are still catching up at 2y/o. we are always told by his pedi that he is doing very very well, and w/ this nicu check ups, the same, but they tell us to give 2 yrs, and at times up until preschool age to fully catch up in areas.
