XP: WDYT of this Irish boy name?

Rory?

I've mentioned it to DH once and I knew a boy in elementary school named Rory, so no odd reaction from me.

Just trying to see if there are some different Irish boy names out there that are not overused.

DS is Brendan

I'm not even sure if I can sell it to DH, but just looking for some feedback.

  • I like the name but I instantly think of Rory from Gilmore Girls who was a girl. I am sure most people would not think that, but I am a huge GG fan.

  • Honestly? I'm not a big fan. Of course I loved the show Gilmore Girls so for me it seems like a girls name. I suspect that even if I hadn't seen that show it would still feel slightly feminine because of the "y" ending which seems to be quite popular for girl names right now.
  • Like pp, I think of a little girl since I loved Gilmore Girls.  I am sure you have been through all of these already, but what about: Davin, Dillion, Finn, Finnegan, Liam, Redmond?  (https://www.babynamesofireland.com/irish-boy-names)
  • If you like it, mention it. If you love it, own it.

I found Conan on behindthename.com. That sounds pretty awesome. Brendan and Conan.

OH... or what about combining Conan and Rory to get Ronan? It's a real name meaning "little seal".

  • I like Rory, and John's cousin is Rory, but the classic irish spelling for a boy is: Rauri

Definitely this! Ignore my opinion for sure. ;) We got a lot of side-eyes about naming our son Grant but we loved it and it's totally him. If your son's name is Rory then that's it. It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks.

My brother's name is Shannon which is usually a girls name in America, but my parents loved it. He owns it. The worst thing that happened to him was he accidentally got stuck in a girls PE class in HS. Of course he loved that. :)

Ronan is on our list of names too.  DH does not like Conan.

DH likes to keep the names classic, but worries about the pronunciation of the Irish spellings of names.  Maybe spelling it the classic way would make it sound less feminine.

      This of course!!!  Big Smile
  • I like Rory for a boy. I love GG and I thought of her but I also thought of Roary, the racing car ;)

Conan I like less. I just think Ahnold pushing a mill around for many years when I think of Conan. :D

ETA: I've never even connected it to Gilmore Girls, although I watched it several times.  I think more of Rory the Racing Car from Sprout and the boy from my school.

  • I love the name Rory.  I used to work for the Boys and Girls Club in North Tahoe and one of my most favorite little boys was named Rory.
  • I really like Rory! My only concern (a tiny one) is that it's a great name for a little boy but might not grow as easily into adulthood. But I do like it. I still like Ronan the best from your earlier post.

  • I like it. My coworker's 2 year old (boy) is Rory - they're both Irish. Another coworker named her son Rowan, another Irish name to consider.

  • I don't like it, but I know a Rory who is a PITA.
  • I always think of Rory as a girl's name too (from Gilmore Girls). Actually, if we have a girl, DH's first choice for a name is Lorelai, using Rory as her nickname.

  • I like it...My sister is considering it for her #2 (unknown Gender) because it's a combo of my Dad's name (Robert) and my name (Tory).

I wento HS with a guy who spelled it Roary.

  • I like it!
