VENT I have to get this out of my system or I'm going to explode

When people are looking for baby names, I hate that people mention TV show characters. I really do. After naming DS, I hated that people asked if it had anything to do with the HBO show about a serial killer. Ugh... he's got an awesome name and I don't care what they are doing on television any more or what they use to do on television. Just because some show writer decided it was a great name for a character should never impact anyone's ability to name their child or give anyone an impression that a child is anything like a writer's figment of their imagination.

My name inspiration came from a great musician and fits my little monkey just perfectly. Just say no to comparing kids to television.

  • Argh!  I hear ya!  A name I like for baby #3, my DH says no because it reminds him of some character on a tv show.

And BTW, I didn't even put the two and two together for your DS.

  • Thanks T.  I never correlate a baby name and tv show either, I usually do it by a personal association or lack of.

I've never thought of the HBO show when I heard your DSs name.

  • I get asked why we named #2 after a FEMALE X-Men character.

On the inside of my head I answer "So I can be asked this question by idiots like you", but then I smile and ignore.

  • I get that. It's frustrating when people make weird comments about your name choice. I've certainly gotten a few weird looks for our son's name. Of course if you ask for someone's thoughts on a name...

I'm not sure if this is inspired by MommyStephs post? She asked what we thought of the name and what popped into my head was a character from tv. I guess I don't see how that's so bad to mention that? Like I said later in the post, I think she, and everyone else, should name their babies whatever they want.

ETA: Had she already decided that her son was going to be named Rory there's no way I would have referenced the TV show.

  • I get your frustration since growing up that's all I heard (my name was almost the same as a famous author and similar to other famous people). Yes it's annoying but people are gonna say what they want.
  • Totally understand... this coming from a Monica.  Darn Monica Lewinsky had to tarnish the name.
  • oh trust me. I get it.  Do you know what my married name is.  barf.  What's worse is some teenager or early 20-something will say "OMG - your name!  Do you ever watch that original 90210 show?"  I swear I want to deck them.
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • This started to come out more recently because DS started coming out of his shell with talking and we're teaching him how to to introductions (to adults and other kids). Just about everyone we run into, he tells his name to.

  • Not just TV shows, famous sports figures is another.  Everyone asks if I named DS after a certain football player and the answer is no.  While he may be my most favorite quarterback, I loved the name long before he was in the NFL.
  • I have a friend whose daughter is not named after a prostitute on a no longer airing tv show.

she's actually resigned to saying yes most of the time since the real reason is a very personal one.

  • I am soooo sick of it too!  If one more person asks me if my DD was named after Twilight I am going to scream!  I have had the name as my top name for YEARS, before I even read the books, and I didn't even think about the books until people started asking me if that was the reason for her name.

It wouldn't have changed my mind, but I have a feeling she will have many classmates with the same name.  Thankfully there are many nicknames for her, part of why we chose the name.

  • My poor husband actually was named for a TV character, I guess there was some old show with two characters Brett and Bart. Personally I think they should have chosen Brett, but they picked Bart. THEN of course Bart Simpson came along. Poor guy.

  • Well you know I am going to agree with you. Do you know how often I still get asked if I was named after the Little Mermaid movie? Too often to count.

  • ... and then there's Julia Goolia.  Ya, that never gets old.
  • Eh i guess i should be lucky my mom spelled my name differntly. Because i am named after a TV Soap. Remeber Dynasty? Yep, there was a Fallon. DingDingDing.

My mom wanted to name me Desidemona, but my grandma told her i would be called Dizzey Desi. and she didnt like that nick name.
