PGD Testing/Embryo banking...is it worth it?

After two failed IVF's, we are trying to figure out what our next step is...

The first two IVF's we were in a study that did PGD on 1 of the 2 embryos we put back each time. One embryo was monosomy 7 and the other was a complex aneupolid (sp??). Because of these chromosomal abnormalities, my RE has recommended PGD. We don't have the greatest quality embryos (some fragmentation, slow growers-morulas on Day 6). Both times we had a few blasts, but my RE doesn't think it is worth doing PGD on one cycle since we have so few good looking embryos. She wants me to bank the embryos, do another fresh cycle, and then do PGD after that.

 So my question is...

Should I just do the fresh cycle and take the gamble since I only have about 2-3 blasts on Day 5?

or

Do I sign up for two more cycles, bank the embryos from the first fresh cycle, and after the second cycle do PGD on the 5-6 embryos I have?

Keep in mind we are totally OOP. The PGD option will be about $6000 more.

Please tell me your thoughts on any of the options, egg banking, egg quality,or PGD!!Thanks for reading. I know it is a long, complicated story. Congrats to you if you could even follow my ramblings.

PS-Did I mention my husband's morph is 0%!!! Yea, I hate IF!

  • I somewhat understand where you are coming from, because we were given incorrect results from genetics testing on the baby we lost and we got pretty far into the PGD process before we realized it wasn't necessary.

It is a hard decision to make considering the financial investment. I think you and YH need to sit down and have a heart to heart. It would be even harder to have a failed cycle after spending the extra $$ on PGD. Honestly if I were in your shoes I would seriously consider Donor Eggs, but everyone is different. What would work for me and MH might not work for you and yours. Best of Luck with this tough decision.

  • If I were you I'd lean towards NOT banking, but it depends on what kind of PGD they're doing and what the margin of error is (CGH vs. PGD, freeze all, etc.).  There's the risk of damage to the embryo, mosacism, and the embryo being traumatized when frozen/thawed.  The studies on whether PGD when screening for aneuploidy raise live birth rates is unproven at this point.  Could you just transfer every blast you have on a given cycle?  The way I see it, you're just kind of letting your body decide whether they're genetically normal rather than a lab, which is prone to error.  It's different if you have an endless amount of blasts and wouldn't transfer them all anyway.  GL!
