Trying to Get Pregnant

A baby, a child, or an adult?

I always wonder what women are thinking about with regard to motherhood.  For example, I'm not really a "baby" kind of person (I do like them, so don't flame me please), but I have such an amazing, friendship-like relationship with my Mom, and I wonder what it would be like to have an adult child one day--someone with whom I can have that kind of connection.  I also know some women who truly love babies, and want nothing more than to care for an infant.  I also know some folks that just love exploring the world with their children.  Clearly, your children will come as babies, grow into children, and then becomes adults--so, which stage do you think about most often when dreaming about motherhood?  I'm sure we'll appreciate all stages, but I just thought it was a fun question....

Re: A baby, a child, or an adult?

  • I honestly look forward to all of the stages. I love babies, I love toddlers, I love children...hmm okay the teenage stage scares me a bit haha but I also have agreat relationship with my mom and so the adult stage is exciting too!

  • I do daydream about all of them, but the baby stage most often. I think that's just because it comes first.
  • I always imagine the baby stage. I can't wait to hold my baby and care for it in the first few months of life. That's what I'm most excited about right now. I work with 8 year olds and honestly, right now, I can't imagine having an actual kid. I guess its good that they start small and you can get used to them first lol. :)

I honestly look forward to all of it. I'm a baby person, I love infants. I'm excited for a child too. My friends who have 4, 5, 6 year olds...they are having a blast, their kids are so funny. I imagine the teenage years are not so fun, lol! I look forward to having the adult relationship my mother and I have now too.

DH on the other hand, has gone straight to the child years! He isn't wild about babies, (although I have no doubts he'll be great with his own) but could play with kids all day long. He gets so jealous when he sees the neighborhood kids out playing "Capture the Flag" nightly in the summer. I have to remind him that he can't run out and ask if he can play with them because he would like be perceived as a complete creeper.

  • I truly cant wait for the day they lay my newborn baby on my chest and I can give that sweet baby its first kiss on the cheek. No matter the stage in that babies life the unconditional love I will get from that being will be all I need!!!
  • I mostly dream about the toddler stage.  However, I was watching parenthood last night and the father was talking about his dream of becoming a grandfather even before he was married.  It made me start to think of my own potential grandchildren and my adult children.  I have thought about the baby stage and the teenage years but that was the first to think of having an adult child.

    This is a fun question.

  • I am all the time cracking up at something someone's kids (usually between 5 and 8) say! I think that is such a fun age because they are learning to interpret everything around them. But, like most everyone else, I am really looking forward to the first few weeks as well, mostly because that is the ultimate bonding time and because it is first Big Smile

  • I think about all of them except the teenage stage.  The teenage stage scares the bejeebus out of me!  I am sure we'll do OK and get through it...but I mostly focus on what comes first.  Baby stage!

  • The baby stage is not my favorite either. I love the age DS1 is at right now (4). The things he comes up with is just incredible; he keeps us laughing. I really look forward to the years to come. I used to be a College counselor and I love the teen/young adult age too. So full of life and anticipation--it is fun to be a  part of it (preparing them for adulthood).

Overall, I think it also depends on the child. DS1 was a tough baby so I can't say I really enjoyed it the way I wished I would have, but DS2 is a great baby and I really loved it and do miss it.

  • I daydream most about a teenager and then secondly a baby and pregnancy. I just completely skip over childhood LOL
  • so far i've loved all the stages (my son is 2).  he was a great baby and i fell instantly in love with him!!  i have loved watching him learn about the world and to develop into his own person and to see his personality come out!  this age is bringing some challenges (holy temper-tantrum city) but it's fun regardless!  i don't know if there will ever be one stage that i'll like more than the other.  i am really ready to have another baby though, i love the baby stage and i miss those cuddles - my son is always on the go now and i usually only get a 2 second hug before he rushes off to do something.

  • Every time I think I look forward to one stage, I start to imagine another stage.  I truly think I'll enjoy each stage.  I think that the baby stage I will enjoy, but I'll also be glad that it doesn't last forever.  I tend to think that the years between ages 3 and 6 are years that I will really enjoy.

    LOL

I always imagine the child phase.  No particular age, just old enough to do things together (play, etc) and have conversations.  Babies are ok, but as they get older they get WAY more interesting.  At least to me.  :)

  • That's a great question. I think all stages have something wonderful you would get out of and that each one also has unique challenges. I will however say from my experience in working at a middle school, I am scared what awaits me when they're pre-teens to teens. Yikes! I think it is so hard to be both a parent and a kid these days, it's hard to find a good balance between trying to guide your child, teach them right from wrong and also give them the freedom to be themselves and make their own mistakes.

  • Definitely the child stage. I do love babies but I know how quickly that stage passes. I'm excited to have children at the "kid" age.

  • I always think about the toddler stage, though I'm not sure why. I look forward to all of itSmile

  • I definitely dream about the baby stage the most-I just love babies and toddlers, but when I'm around my students I sometimes find myself thinking about what I will do with my own school-aged kid. I have a lot of fun with my students, so I can only imagine what it will be like when it's my own child.

  • Im not going to pretend that the teenage years dont make me worry a little. Things are so different now compared to when I was growing up I cant even imagine what it will be like by the time I have a child who is a teenager. DH works with high schoolers and the stories I hear...ugh-but its a package deal and you do what you can the best you can. On that note, I lurve me some babies!

  • I mostly daydream about baby through about age 5. Most of my friends have children in that age range right now, so it's easy to picture.

All of this...except I work with 10 year olds so I agree with the actual kid part x 100 especially at this point in the school year! ;)

  • I think about the toddler stage most often, I can't wait to show my child new things and watch them with all kinds of experiences. As a photographer, I love working with children at this age, they're so carefree and trusting, and often hilarious:) I'm looking forward to all of it though. I'm just so excited to have a family!

  • Babies scare me a little. Childhood is awesome. Then, when they're adults, I suspect it's probably bittersweet that, after all the raising you've done, they're off on their own. All that said, I probably prefer the childhood phase, but I think the most fascinating thing about becoming a mom... that make my heart go pitter-patter is watching them from that first +HPT that indicates their existence, to the first US, to meeting them to the first time on down the road to seeing them get married and have kids of their own.

Wow... I almost made myself tear up a little. I wanna be a mommy. We all do. After all, that's why we're here.

  • I LOVE the Gilmore Girls, and that's partly what I think about if I ever have a girl!  I'm semi-scared of caring for an infant because I'm the youngest in my family--I've never even changed a diaper!  I'm really looking forward to taking a LO to museums, watching DVDs with popcorn, crying at the AMAZING performance that he/she will give in the school play, etc.  Then, I think it will be so amazing to go to college graduations, weddings, grandchildren....and how close we'll be at that point.  Of course, I'm sure the infant thing will be pretty nifty too--I'll be the lady at all the hospital classes beforehand to learn what I'm supposed to do!!  Thank you ladies for providing such interesting answers, and taking my question in the spirit in which I intended it!!  As always, good luck to us all!!!  :)

  • Good question!

I give riding lessons to girls ranging in ages of 8-13. I cannot wait to have a LO in that age group. I keep thinking of all the fun things we can do and how I can't wait to be a 'horse show mom'.
