PP clothing - will I ever be able to fit into my pants again?

So far I've lost 26 of the 39 lbs that I gained during my pregnancy. When I tried on my pre WW jeans though (I never got around to throwing out my bigger pants) I couldn't even fit into those even though I weigh less now than I did when I fit into them before! Could it be because I had a last minute C-Section vs a natural birth? Can any one tell me the average time it takes to fit into normal clothing again? My husband said because things shift, I may never be able to fit into them again no matter how much less I weigh. Could this be true too? TIA!

  • Your baby is only 3 weeks old! Give it time! I think it took me about 3 months to fit back into my pp clothes, and even now they still fit tighter around the waist/stomach area than they used to.

  • Give yourself some time and definitely don't fret about it.  It takes a while to get back into PP clothes and there are some that will never fit me again because my body has changed shape.  After number 1 I needed to be almost 10lbs lighter than my pre-pregnancy weight to have all my pre-pregnancy clothes fit well.
  • After DC#1, I never did get back into my PP pants before getting pregnant with DC#2 (there is a 19 month age difference).

BUT, I am just now fitting back into pants I haven't been able to wear since 2008!  I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe. :)

  • I wore maternity clothes or yoga pants for at least 2 months after DD was born.  You're at 3 weeks, give yourself time.
  • I just started back to work today and I am wearing pre-pregnancy clothes. It took until about 6 weeks pp before I could even squeeze into my fat jeans, and a few more weeks until I could wear my regular jeans, though. It takes some time.

And even though I'm in regular clothes, it doesn't mean they fit great - my hips are smaller, but my waist is bigger. So some of my clothes, which were chosen because my waist was smaller and my hips were bigger, don't look great.

  • J is 19 months old. I weigh 8 pounds less than I did pre-pregnancy. I *still* can't fit into some of my old clothes (pants especially). I think your body just changes shape and things kind of . . . redistribute.

But you're only three weeks out! Give yourself some time to adjust :-)

  • My doctor told me nine months up, nine months down! So don't feel any pressure, especially at this point.
  • Ditto the others - give yourself time!

If you're really worried, you could get a Belly Bandit or a cheap knockoff.  I had an abdominal binder (ugly medical version of the same thing) to help my c/s incision heal and it really made a difference (after a good 4-6 weeks wearing it all the time, starting 3 months pp) helping my body finish contracting so my pants would fit again.

  • Gosh I think I wore maternity jeans until 9mo pp with Maggie (although I had scar healing issues).  Then with Molly was more like 4mo pp but I was sad to see them go - the stretchy waist and no zipper/buttons was so easy.
  • Ditto the others to give yourself time. I lost all of my weight pretty quickly but it seemed to take a few months for the uterus to shrink. Also, I had to build up some muscle that I lost during the pregnancy and tighten up the abs again to get close to my former figure. I would say that even though I lost the weight quickly, it took about 6 months to get close to my former body. Even with all of that work, I still felt like my stomach area was an inch or two thicker.

  • Just remember your body may change shape after having a baby, so your weight may get back to (or below) "normal" but your old clothes may never fit the same again. Give it a few months to see if you're one of those people (like me) who needs to buy new clothes every time you have a baby.  Hey, it's not the worst thing in the world - what better excuse to shop for new clothes for yourself!?  Stick out tongue

I have to say, this made me giggle.  Your DH is right, for some folks (again, like me) things shift after having a baby - but how the heck does HE know that!?  You have a very wise DH.

I found this to be true. For most of last year I was down 10+ pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight and still could only fit in to half my pants.

What is UP with that? My boobs are smaller but everywhere else feels the same (or bigger).

  • Yeah, I definitely feel robbed. My whole life I looked forward to bigger PP boobs and that didn't happen. Things in my midsection definitely redistributed. Totally worth it for the kiddo, though, right?

  • Lol - he was/is the one that seemed to know more about pregnancy and babies than I did/do. He attributes it to his sister having 6 children :)
