Tell me about your nursery furniture

We're still crib shopping, so I would appreciate any info you can give me about the furniture you have in your nursery - what brand, model, even finish?  What do you like about it?  What don't you like about it?  What furniture pieces do you have?  Any other advice would be appreciated, too!

Re: Tell me about your nursery furniture

  • If you don't have the book Baby Bargains, you should at least get it from the library and take notes before going (but I do suggest buying it). We took that with us for shopping. We have a Legacy crib, which is very high quality and it shows. We got it from Rock A Bye Baby in Annville. It has free delivery to our area and crib setup for $15. Can't beat that. That's teh only thing we actually bought - the dresser was in my grandmother's basement from my baby days and I refinished it. The glider I just got at a regular discount furniture store. The bookcase I had and refinished. We use the dresser as a changing table.

The ONLY thing that I don't love about our crib is that it only has two settings for the mattress - up and down. Others have three or more settings. I'm short, so when we put the mattress down, it went the WHOLE way down and it was rather hard to reach. But now that he's standing, it would have to be the whole way down now anyway, so that it's a moot point now.

  • We're in the process of putting our nursery together today!  We bought our crib from JCP (Olivia crib in white) mostly b/c of a family discount & the positive reviews that I read online/heard from friends.  Baby Bargains gave them a C b/c of customer service issues but from what I've read on these boards, most didn't have any issues.  Ours arrived before the expected ship date, we had a free shipping promotion (to the store), and it arrived in perfect condition.  We set it up today and it was EASY.  Seems very sturdy and good quality too.  We're pleased.

We had a dresser already so we'll finish that and change the hardware.  A client gave me a changing table but we found a sturdier, matching one on Craigslist.  I personally wouldn't invest in a new changing table.  If we didn't already have a dresser I would have bought one that would work as a changing table too.  After they outgrow the changing table there really isn't any other use for it.  The next big items we need to order are the glider and ottoman.  I think I want a small table next to those to set water, pacifiers, tissues, etc on.

    Good luck!

  • OK. I think we're going to go with Young America by Stanley.  A little pricey, but I think we'll get a discount b/c DH sometimes does computer work for the store.  We may just get the crib and find a dresser somewhere to refinish to match the crib.  Now just to pick which style we like...

And to start shopping for a glider...

  • While I don't usually like white furniture, we went with a white crib so that I could paint everything else to match. So I painted my baby dresser white and changed the knobs, painted the bookcase white, bought a cheap white night stand for beside the glider and bought an unfinished little stand with four small baskets from Michaels and painted it white. I keep that beside the changing table to hold his meds, socks, shoes, wascloths in the beginning for covering the penis during diaper changes, q-tips, nail clippers, etc. Very handy.
  • We have the Young America furniture for our 'big girl' furniture, and have been very happy with it.  While we don't have the crib, we did get a small dresser with a hutch that we are currently using for a changing table.  I like it because it will become just a dresser and bookshelves when DD is older.  It's pretty decent quality for the price, too.
  • We have Young America by Stanley (the built to grow line).  Our crib is a natural wood color and it is a convertible crib.  We also have a matching dresser and book case.  So far we have been very happy with everything.  The one nice thing is that you can register your furniture on their website and if they are going to discontinue anything from that line, they will email you so you can purchase pieces before they are gone.  We also purchased a glider, but we went with Dutalier for that.  If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at eadelviscio AT comcast DOT net.  HTH - good luck!
