Hair Coloring

I set up a hair appointment last week for today... I'm supposed to go at 3:30, but I'm really nervous. I know there are mixed emotions about coloring hair, so i just don't know which way to go with this. I have a wedding shower to host next weekend and have been feeling really ugly lately.... i think i need this boost of confidence, but if it's putting my child in danger, i would rather feel ugly.  I had planned to just get some foils to hide my roots.... but I just don't know now...

What would you do?

Re: Hair Coloring

  • I have no way of knowing if its true or not, but I have read that foils are ok because they don't really touch your scalp like getting a full color would. I am feeling the same way, I have highlights but I want to go back to my regular non-highlighted color because of the cost, but I'm afraid of coloring it!

ETA: Here is where I saw the info... says highlights are safer, who knows...

  • I read a couple of journal articles on hair coloring while pregnant. It seems that as long as you aren't bleaching the hell out of your hair on a daily basis a little color every now and then should be fine. I know that I will probably get highlights later on (when mine fade out). Good luck with your decision :)

  • My dr. said hair dye was fine, then i went to the hair dresser and both me and her decided were just gonna wait  the couple weeks till the second trimester.  i was feeling crazy ugly too but i got a hair cut and it helped a LOT.

  • I've heard all over that there's nothing proving it harmful but there's also nothing proving it safe.  I know they say highlights are the best option because they don't touch the scalp but after a lifetime of highlights I know for a fact that there are many times where the goop touches my scalp...

As a result I'm just going to wait till November to be blond again...

  • I'm a hairdresser, and if I wasn't able to touch color or perms or let alone having to smell it while I was pregnant I would be out of a job!  If you are unsure, just get hi-lites and low-lites in foils.  This is my second pregnancy and my little girl is perfectly fine!!!!  Hope that helps!

I think you should go for it.

my greys are creeping in, so I am waiting until 13 weeks to get my hair cut and colored. You are 13 weeks, I would do it.

  • I have a badly needed appointment next week...I normally do a full dye, but from my naturopath and doctor's advice, I am just getting highlights to tide me over.  Both said they were totally safe, and my naturopath hardly ever says anything is safe (she's very conservative), so I feel totally fine doing em.

I have heard that your hair can react differently to dyes and bleach when you are pregnant, so I hope the color turns out ok!  I am a little nervous about that part.

I've never heard that with coloring your hair can react differently.  I think you will be fine, I've been a hairdresser since '99 and I haven't seen that happen?  Just thought I would let you know so you aren't too nervous.  You might lose your hair after pregnancy but that is normal!  That I've seen happen.  But you will be fine!!
