Is this 'survival mode' ever going to end?!

My first baby was a breeze.  This kid...not so much.  She's got colic and reflux and she's 4 months old.  She still screams the majority of the day.  Someone tell me that this will end soon!  I feel so overwhelmed!  (My babies are 15 months apart!  Yeesh!)

  • I'm sorry! It does get better, I had a reflux-y baby, and he got better/easier after 4 months. What have you tried with your 4 month old? Are you nursing? I think colic = sensitive tummy.

  • We've been put on Zantac, then Prevacid.  Her reflux itself seems to be better, but the colic doesn't seem any better.  We're exclusively BFing.  She refuses (TOTALLY refuses!) a bottle so trying a formula won't work.  The girl would rather starve herself than take a bottle.

  • Have you tried cutting diary out of your diet? Maybe you've tried this, but having dealt with our own fussy baby/reflux issues, I think it could all be related to milk proteins. I know, not the most fun cutting dairy out, but it could help immensely. I quit nursing when our baby wasn't consolable and the only thing that salvaged him was a hypoallergenic formula-- had I just cut out dairy from my diet, it would have provided the same results (no one told me and I was clueless). Anyway, hang in there, it WILL get easier (coming from the girl who only has one right now!). Everyone says the first 4-5 months are the hardest, you're almost there.

  • I agree with PP...if you haven't cut out dairy/soy yet, I would. Give it at least 2 weeks to see if it makes a difference. Does your LO have mucusy or bloody stools?

  • I haven't tried that yet.  Maybe I should give that a go.  Do I cut out EVERYTHING that has ANY dairy in it or just the main things like milk, cheese, etc.?  Her stools are very runny, but not bloody.

  • Definitely try cutting out dairy, I think it's a trigger for a lot of babies (their new tummies just can't handle it). I'd cut out all the big stuff-- milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and anything obvious. I'm not sure you need to go as far as read labels and not eat anything with traces of dairy, but I'd see how it goes. Once we put Baron on hypoallergenic formula (not milk based), he was an entirely different baby. It's a pain I know, but I think it might be worth it. Give it 4-5 days at least to see a difference, and feel free to ask away if you need support!

  • This was my DD exactly. Colic and reflux and wouldn't take a bottle. She was seeing a GI specialist and here is what I had to cut out (her specialist recommended I cut out these things and it helped significantly)

Honestly, I had to cut EVERYTHING out of my diet. I cut out all dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt), any gassy veggies, anything acidic,  no chocolate or caffeine, nothing spicy, no harsh garlic flavors, no soda. It was a huge sacrifice but I did see a huge difference in her reflux and she overcame her colic around 4.5 months old. (had reflux until almost 10 months but I added some things back into my diet by that time). I also gave mylicon after every feeding, gave her colic massages everyday after a bath, and had her sleep at an incline. I was also told to start rice cereal in a bottle of pumped bmilk before bed and then when she refused the bottle her specialist had me start rice cereal on a spoon but very very soupy at 3.5 months old. He told me if she was refluxing really bad I could give her a little rice cereal after every feeding to help the food to stay down and not reflux up.

I know this is really hard, but you will get through it.

  • It will! That was my DS2 (although I wouldn't call DS1 an easy baby, he was much easier than my second!). The first 4 months were a living hell. He screamed all day, was up all night, and wouldn't let anyone else hold him, including my DH. It got better in the fifth month. By month 7 it was much better. I know that feels like an eternity away right now but it will get better. DS2 is 8 months old now and he's soooooo much more enjoyable than he was in the beginning.

  • I cut out milk, cheese, and yogurt from my diet and i also gave Mylicon after each feeding and it got sooo much better. And then slowly i added a milk to my diet and then cheese. some people say that mylicon diden't work for them but it totally did for us i could see a huge difference when we used it and when we diden't and once he was better is topped giving it at around 5-6 months i think.
