What does the 20 Week Check Up Consist of....

I have to see all the doctors in the practice and get to know them so I have been hopping around. I told my doc (a female) I was only comfortable with a female doctor for the internal exams. The rest of the apts no big deal. No one really expalined what happens at each appointment....I figured since it's a 1/2 way marker...is there anything different?

I am just still so happy there's not an internal every visit like I orginally thought..ahhhH!

At my doc office 18-22 week check up we do the anatomy scan which is about 30 long and they check the baby head to toe to make sure everything is ok and looks normal and find out the sex of the baby if you havent already. then the rest of the apt is the same measure the belly hear the heart beat and they check my cervix ( not sure if they do it for you i have cervical Ca. so they do it ruitinly to make sure its okie dokie ) Smile

Usually at 20 weeks they will schedule you for your anatomy scan. They will take 15 to 30 min doing an ultrasound taking pictures of the brain, heart, everything. I personally had my anatomy scan i radiology and I go in thursday to go over the results. I think thursday will be a normal appointment and just overview of the scan. They said they would call me if they found anything abnormal with the scan so Its a good thing I didnt get a call. That is just my experience..

Nothing different then your previous appts. I didn't have any internals done until I was 37 weeks and then not again because I opted out after the first experience (painful and spotting).

The only other procedure that will happen is the strep b test. I can't remember when that happens, sometime after 30 weeks I think, but the nurse will swab your bum.

they didn't do my anatomy scan in my doctor's office, i had to go to a special place to get it done. so at my 20week OB appt they just did the typical stuff. checked my urine, weight, & BP. listened for the baby on the doppler. Answered any questions I had & talked to me about some tests that would be coming up in the next couple of appointments. and i was on my way. no internal checks or anything.

At my anatomy scan it was probably about 30minutes & they took all kinds of measurements of her limbs, spine, heart, etc, i got to find out the sex. i have to go back in 3wks though because baby was being a bit stubborn & they didn't get all of the measurements needed.

At the 20 week appt we did the anatomy scan in the radiology dept, went to the lab so I could pee in a cup, and then went up to go over the a/s with my midwife. She reviewed it, talked about the results and amniotic fluid levels (mine were on the high end of normal, so that is probably case-specific), and then checked baby's heartbeat and my belly growth. It was pretty normal, really, other than the a/s.
