Do you still cut up certain things like grapes???

I'm just curious what other moms do--- because I'm a freak about my kid choking and so I do cut the grapes in half (even the smaller ones).  My DH gets mad b/c I tell him to cut them--he tells me he's pretty sure DS chews them before swallowing.  Yeah-- if anyone has every choked before--I'm sure they would say the same thing!!

Am I overprotective or what???

Re: Do you still cut up certain things like grapes???

  • Nope. DD is great at chewing food up. I'm actually comparing her to other kids I know IRL, who will literally stuff their mouths and then gag when they try to swallow all the unchewed food. This does not ever happen with DD. If I had one of those kids, I'd still cut everything up into teeny, tiny pieces.

My one hard and fast rule is that DD has to sit still to eat- either at the table or in the stroller if we're out. It's not okay for her to run around with food in her hands.

  • Most of the time I still cut up grapes, and if I don't I sit near her and keep an eye on her to make sure she chews (she then tells me "Look, mama, I'm biting. And I'm chewing") I do cut hot dogs too, although she's only had them a handful of times.

I don't think you're overprotective; my DH doesn't think I need to cut grapes for DD either, but I do it anyway, more for my own peace of mind than anything probably.

Not in a lonnnng time.  But DD just doesn't choke, really.  She's good at chewing up things, as well as swallowing--for some odd reason.  DD plays a game where he gives her huge bites of food to chew and swallow (don't ask me why) and she does it.  Kinda weird.
  • I used to cut grapes into 1/4s but now I just cut them in half. And I still cut up hot dogs into half moons. DH doesn't think that it is nessecary, but I am a total over-protective mother! Embarrassed
  • I still cut grapes in half, but mainly because for some reason E hates to bite into whole grapes.
  • I didn't and DD did fine but I still have to cut grapes up for school and now she asks me to cut them at home too, so I do.  I can go either way really, but day care can't.

  • I cut up grapes.

Sometimes he'll grab them before I cut them and he does fine, but if I'm serving them as a snack or something I always cut them in half. Better safe than sorry!

  • I had to give my son the heimlich once, when he was quite little. Ever since then I'm terrified of seeing him choke again. I still cut up quite a bit- grapes and hot dogs for sure. He is also one of those kids though that loves to shove as much in his mouth as he can so the smaller I can cut it, the safer.

  • I worry about DD choking too.  I still cut grapes in half at home, but if she gets them while we are out I just keep a close eye on her.
  • i cut up everything...better be safe than sorry...

  • I still cut them, I'm paranoid though. At the market the other day she grabbed the bag of grapes and threw a whole one in her mouth before I could grab it. She ate it fine but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • Only recently have I stopped cutting grapes all the time. I still do for particularly big grapes, but for normal-sized grapes, I sometimes do and sometimes don't.

I still don't give her popcorn, but I know she tried it once at preschool and didn't like it anyway. Plus DH hates the smell of it so it's not like I keep it around the house anyway.

  • Yes I do. I cut up all fruits for him and hot dogs as well. He likes to shove a bunch in his mouth at one time, so its better to be safe than sorry I feel.

  • I cut up grapes for DS because he jams food in his mouth as if someone is going to steal it from him.

  • I cut up EVERYTHING because my son has choked so many times. It is so scary every time he chokes. Don't feel bad for cutting up foods, I would rather do that than experience a choking incident. Not all kids chew their foods properly....mine must be one of them.

  • You aren't overprotective at all.  I cut up grapes and hot dogs.  DS is 3 and chews really well.  His windpipe is still really little and the ER docs can't get grapes and hotdogs out fast enough....
I'll be cutting them up until he's probably 5 or so.  Anyone know the AAP recommendation?
  • Yes.  Grapes are one of the biggest choking hazards.  They are the perfect sized to get lodged in the wind pipe.   Even if your child chews their food well or has never choked before, it only takes one time for them to get distracted while eating.  I don't get it's overprotective at all - not any more so than refusing to leave your child unattended in the bath for 2 minutes.

  • YES!  I still do.  Last summer, a little girl in MN choked on a grape at daycare and died.  Too close to home for me.  Better safe than sorry.  https://www.myfoxtwincities.com/dpp/news/Girl-Chokes-to-Death-on-Grape-in-North-Mankato-jun-23-2010

  • I still cut up things like grapes and hot dogs (which she rarely has).  DD even reminds me to cut them up for her so she doesn't choke.  She's never stuffed food in her mouth and always chews well, but it's worth a few extra minutes of preparation in my mind.
  • I still cut a lot of foods, especially those associate with children choking. Why tale the risk?

  • I saw on the Today show one morning that hotdogs should be cut in 4ths until children are the age of 5 b/c they still have such small windpipes.  I would think that grapes would fit into this category.
