Daycare worker fired - I feel awful (long)

Ok so I know I did the right thing but I feel awful.  So a few weeks ago I was picking V up early and was watching through the door of her classes room.  I saw her playing with a group of her friends sitting on one of the teachers laps who was reading a book to them.  It was so cute.  Then all of a sudden V reached for the book, which the teacher jerked back and said to her in a very harsh tone "Oh your gonna get it missy".  Um Ok not cool - she's 14 months old.  So I told the center director - strictly for her information in case it was a pattern - and really didn't want the teacher confronted with it since V has to be in that room there for another few weeks. (The past two rooms have been awesome and I understand from friends that the next two are as well which is why I didn't just look for a new daycare).

Anyway fast forward two weeks to yesterday where I was picking up V and saw the same teacher (there are two in her room) rushing around in a frenzy picking up toys. I'm kind of watching this through the door again and see her PHYSICALLY uproot V, who was sitting in some toys, from against the wall, by placing one hand under her armpit and dragging her about 18 inches in one movement.  I confronted her with what I just saw and she said it probably looked harder then it really was.

Anyway I reported this to the center director and said that my intent was not to get this teacher fired but that I would like V to be moved early.  Well I found out today she was indeed fired - and I feel awful.  But I don't regret for a second what I reported and as I type this I think the right decision was made.  Just thought I would throw that out there in case someone would have handled it differently.  Thanks!

  • Don't feel bad. It sounds like that chick had no business looking after little kids. It sucks that she lost her job, but better that than pull a kid's arm out of its socket or something.

Agree with stever -- sounds like this was NOT her field to begin with.  I would've complained as well.  Don't second guess -- guessing there is more behind her firing than just your 2 complaints.

  • Yeah, I'd have reported it, too.  Plus you may not have been the only one to complain about her!

Never second guess your child's safety.  What she did was wrong.  I've worked in the day care field for over 24 years.  I myself have reported co-workers for the way they have treated the children.

When people leave their children in the care of others they expect their child to be loved and cared for, not to be treated badly in any way.

I have major issues of some one putting children in any harms way.

Good for you for not being afraid to speak up when you saw something wrong.

  • Don't for a minute think that the two things you witnessed was the extent of what she has done. I worked in daycare in a previous life and there are people that get burned out or just shouldn't be in that career. You saved another child from being mistreated. You absolutely handled it correctly - the director can't see everything all the time and if I was a director, I wouldnt tolerate that at all from one of my caregivers.

    My thoughts exactly.

  • I can only imagine what she's done that you didn't witness. Sounds like the daycare did the right thing to me.

  • She shouldn't be around kids if she's grabbing them in ANY WAY. It's good she got fired, could be stopping her from mistreating or potentially hurting someone elses child. You did a good deed.

  • Don't feel bad, most likely you were not the first to report a complaint and the center decided that firing her was the best move. I'm sure it wasn't based only on your 2 complaints. I'm glad you saw what you saw, poor little ones, they can't tell us if people treat them badly.
