Stinky Neck Roll

So, I'm a jerk and for a while wasn't using bibs w/my DS because he was so little I thought that the bibs were too big and bulky around his neck. Well, duh, now as he eats he lets more dribble out his mouth plus whenever spit up gets there --

so we started using bibs or tucking burp cloths under his chin. BUT - theres a little sour milk smell (not too bad) from the spit up that does get in there - and I noticed its slightly reddish and starting to peel a little. Is that just from the excess moisture that had formed? Its not too irritated looking right now, but how can I prevent it (besides bibs and burp cloths??)? Can I put something on it to help?

Re: Stinky Neck Roll

  • DD gets this way too. I clean her neck with a warm washcloth and then dry it a few times a day (gotta keep it dry). I also put A&D ointment on it, and the red went away. Hope this helps!

  • dd had the same issue with the whole neck role thing.  I would clean it with warm water and apply corn starch.   It is a little messy but it works really well.  The ointments can just add to the moisture and make things worse according to my doctor.  I was also told not to use baby powder.
  • DS drools a ton and it gets in his neck roll.  I keep it clean with a wipe if I'm out or a wash cloth and like pp said, gotta keep it dry.

  • We had this problm with DD as well. I started getting a damp soapy washcloth and washing it several times a day (usually at every other diaper change). Then I would dry it really well and put a very little bit of Butt Paste on it. Within about a week it was completely cleared up and no bad smell.?
  • DD just had this problem and apparently the red was tender, so when I put her in the bath the other day, she wailed (I guess it smarted) but I had no idea at the time. Sad I bought Penaten cream and the red seemed to clear up within a few hours. It's SOOOO hard to get in to clean the rolls, though! She hates it when I try to tilt her head back to clean in there! But it does smell much better now than the first few weeks. Ick! Smile
  • If you're having a hard time getting to the neck roll, place baby on belly so they lift their head.

Keep clean and dry.  Others swear by a little diaper cream in there.

  • DD had the same issue.  I showed it to her dr and she said it's a yeast infection. You really can't prevent it, dr said yeast loves to grow in warm areas. She recommened a otc cream, Lotrimin.  It went away the next day. I clean her neck often but it does come back from time to time.
