Question for any teachers/instructors/professors....

Good Morning ladies!

I am an instructor and facilitate a government program, the last few days I have noticed that I get completely winded when talking to my class! This never happened pre-pregnancy or in early, early pregnancy, but all of a sudden this last week I feel like I am up there running a marathon and I can't catch my breathe... any other teachers or presenters feel this way too. I have my 14w appointment today and am going to ask my doc, but just thought I would ask all you ladies too.

Thanks!

  • I am a Speech Therapist in an elementary school and I have noticed the same thing! I am a size 20 and overweight, so I just assumed that was the reason?

  • I didn't have the winded thing, but I did have a couple of instances around 13 or 14 weeks where I suddenly felt quite dizzy and had to sit down and drink some water.  My doctor said that was normal.

  • Not the catagories you asked for (I'm a SAHM) but I get out of breath when I'm reading books to my LO! So weird.

  • I have noticed this a bit too.  From what I have read it's a pretty common symptom for this stage of pregnancy.  I have begun doing most of my lectures sitting down.  That seems to help.

  • I teach full time at a university.  I'm feeling better now, but in first tri and I had to sit down during class a LOT.  It feels odd, but do it when you can.
  • I'm a Sociology Professor and I haven?t noticed any short-windedness during my lectures. But if I have to move around very suddenly- like up stairs, or very brisk walking (like when I'm racing across campus to make it to my next class in time) I get an intense, pounding headache. I always begin each class with terrible pain in my temples- not fun!

     Hang in there!

  • Totally. It has been worse this week. I feel silly. It is really obvious.

  • Thanks ladies! I haven't had any classes since 8w and this was our first week back in session, so it took me by surprise as I never had it before. I try to sit as much as I can when I am facilitating. Hopefully it passes soon, but I am glad to hear I am not the only one!!

  • I have been getting winded climbing the stairs to my classroom, but I have not gotten winded talking to my classes.  I usually only have one day a week where I talk almost the whole day.  I try to break it up so I am not overly tired.

  • I am a teacher and have definitely been getting winded when I am speaking to the class.  I also had to give a speech at a dinner the other night and got winded there too!  I probably sounded like I was nervous or something because I had to catch my breath a couple of times.

  • I'm a teacher too, but currently just supplying.  I haven't been working much as my main school has a case of Fifth's Disease going around!!  Anyway, I have noticed that on days when I go for walks with my hubby I always want to talk and I can barely catch my breath and end up walking much slower than when I'm on my own. I would say my "breathlessness" makes me feel like I've been lifting weights or something like that.

  • Sometimes, but not much.  Just read in my What to Expect book the other night that some mom's may feel this way and that it's normal.  (That's what my book said, so don't quote me.)

I just looked it up (pg. 202-203).  It says we can blame the hormones.  And the uterus since it pushes up against the diaphragm as it grows.  Also to only worry about this feeling if your lips or fingertips seem to be turning bluish or have chest pain and a rapid pulse.

Geez, what a book worm.  Embarrassed

  • I'm a group fitness instructor, and started off in GREAT shape...and I'm MUCH more winded than usual when teaching a class.  When I'm not pregnant, it's not usually this bad. I teach group strength training, primarily, and panting through most of the class these days (actually had to move the mic away from my mouth because my heavy breathing was louder than the music, lol).  My midwife told me the extra blood volume, etc., made it harder to breathe.
