Re: meds- OTC

  • I'd contact your doctor just to be on the safe side.

  • I had a sinus infection last month and tried approved OTC meds before I finally gave up and saw a doctor.  He prescribed Amoxicillin, and cough syrup with codeine so I could finally sleep, and he recommended Mucinex DM during the day.  I felt terrible abput taking so much medicine but I was miserable for over 2 weeks--my ribs hurt from coughing and I would often cough so hard, I couldn't keep food down.  Don't wait like I did!  If I could do it over again, I would have seen a doctor much earlier--there is no reason to be so miserable!
  • Yeah my OB says this is the only stuff I can take.. Amoxcillian for infection b/c Im coughing up stuff and blowing stuff out that is not clear.  Tylenol for pain, Sudafed for congestion, and Robtussin for  chest congestion.  I just really really wish I could get a steroid shot (decadron)!!  I just hate taking all this!

  • I was sick recently at about 20 wks and took robitussin (with nothing else).. I thought they said no to Sudafed.  If amoxocil is related to amoxolcillin.. it is probably safe since it has been around so long.. and I've take antibiotics pregnant, too.. I'd call my OB if I were you.

    Feel better.

  • My OB and regular MD and pharmacist says ok to Sudafed  Hmmm.  Just the small red pill behind the counter.  :)

  • Yes I took Sudafed (regular kind, not daytime...small red pill) with my second daughter. She turned out just peachy. And it really helped with my cold at the time! Hope you're feeling better very very soon!

  • The whole sudafed thing has gotten very confusing... I guess there are a couple of different formulas.

I have no idea if i took the right one when i was early on...

As for finding out the safety of over the counter meds, I used two rules...

    1. I'd check their rating at https://www.safefetus.com/Search.asp

    2. I'd call the doctor and confirm what I found

Seems like 9 times out of 10 they were just going to that site or a similar one to get the rating.

Best of luck.. I got a nasty cold back in December/January and was totally miserable.
