Preemies

Bad things happen when...

You drink.  I gave birth to my 24 week preemie on Oct. 2nd.  I am now pregnant (12-13 weeks along) with our unplanned second.  Does anyone have any post preemie pregnancy success stories?  TIA

  • There are sooo many success stories! If you scroll down (or actually probably to page 2 now), look in the Pregnant After Preemie check-in...it isn't a full list, but it does include all the girls who've participated in the check-in and their outcomes. Lots of full-term babies! Congrats!

  • Thanks and thanks for the info.
  • Are you ok right now? I can't imagine a surprise BFP so soon after everything you've been through. *hugs*

  • Wow - congrats!  That's a lot to take in.  I can't imagine the emotions you are feeling!

My son was born at 26w2d (almost at 24 weeks, we made it 2 wks longer than the doctors thought we could!) and I am pregnant with our 2nd.  I don't remember why your LO was born at 24 weeks.  I was diagnosed with IC and got a cerclage placed.  I've been on weekly P17 shots as well. I'm now 31w2d pregnant :-)  I'm not term yet but I am a lot further along!

     Hugs!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of my NICU mom friends is also pregnant again (her son was born in Aug, and her next is due in aug.) She's been meeting with a peri since day one and so far has had a healthy pg, and is hoping to go FT this time!

I hope all goes well for you - I'm sure there is a huge range of emotions with a pg so soon after LO was born.

  • Congrats and many thoughts for a healthy, full-term pregnancy! I hope this pregnancy goes well for you. Take faith in the fact that you will be seeing high risk doctors and they will know your story this time around.

Can I ask what kind BC you were using? I'm really not trying to be snarky, its just one of my biggest fears that we will get pregnant again too soon (my doctor says i need to wait 2 years for my body to handle another pregnancy) so I'm trying to cover all the bases. Eventually I will have an IUD but he won't place one for several months still.

  • They don't know why I had a preemie.  I imagine stress was a big part of it.  My fil died unexpectedly and then I started my next school semester, and we don't really get along with his family.  But we don't really know.  Did your insurance company pay for your P17 shot?  I'm excited you've made it 31 weeks.  My doctor said he wants to do the P17 shot in the 2nd trimester.
  • I was pumping (my ds doesn't really take a bottle) so I was on a low estrogen pill.
  • I have a very similar story. My son was born at 24 weeks in March of 2008 and to our surprise we found out we were pregnant in November 2008. DS was only 8 months old and had only been home from the NICU for 4 months!

The biggest concern was my incision from my classical c-section. DS was in distress (prolapsed cord) so I had an emergency c-section and in order to get him out quicker they did a vertical incision. Typically, these are the incisions that are at risk of rupture in future pregnancies and they advised us to wait at least one full year before getting pregnant again. Not sure if this applies to you, or if you delivered vaginally, but I was able to go full-term with my DD.

My doctor did say when she delivered her that I was extremely close to rupture and she could literally see through my uterus because it was paper thin. We had planned on having one more so she opened up my old incision from DS and stitched it back together thicker to hold up better to a future pregnancy.

We are currently pregnant with our last and I have an incompetent cervix so I have a cerclage and I am receiving the p17 shots as well (which are covered by my insurance) and it helped carry DD to term and I am hoping it will do the same for our current little one. I definitely think the shots help and if I were you I would definitely take them if they are offered. Hope that helps! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

  • My insurance does cover P17.
