Natural Birth

Pls share your birth plans?

Hi ladies,

We have to put together our birth plan for our Bradley class this week, and so I thought I'd ask to see some examples of natural birth plans that you may be willing to share?

If it's easier to link me to it, or send it via email, my email address is stefaniemills at yahoo

I'm also totally open to suggestions you might want to post here in the comments, etc.

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Pls share your birth plans?

  • We have a nice, polite opening paragraph, thanking the birth attendants for being there on out special day, yada yada yada, then:

Here is an outline of our preferences for our birth experience:

?         No drugs of any kind are to be offered or administered to Jessica.  If at any time she should change her mind we will discuss it with you at that time.

?         Jessica would prefer to have complete freedom of movement during labor and birth.

?         No routine IVs should be administered. Jessica will stay hydrated through clear fluids.

?         Fetal monitoring and vaginal exams should be kept to a minimum. Amniotic membranes should not be artificially ruptured.

?         We prefer perineal tissues to tear naturally if necessary, as opposed to episiotomy.

?         Cord cutting should be delayed until the cord has stopped pulsating. Either Michael or Jessica would like to catch baby if possible, placing baby immediately to breast.  At this time we would like to have a breastfeeding and bonding time. All routine procedures should be postponed until after this time. No eyedrops or Hep B vaccines should be administered at any time.

?         Please do not offer or give any supplemental bottles or pacifiers

Thank you for allowing us to summarize our desires for the birth of our first child. We have decided to have a doula present to assist us in staying relaxed and comfortable. Following are a number of items listed that if at all possible, we would like to accomplish with your help.

    1. If I go past my due date and baby and I are doing fine, I prefer to go into labour naturally rather than be induced. If induction becomes necessary, I would prefer to try natural induction methods or having my membranes stripped.
    2. I prefer to have internal exams conducted by the same person each time (as shift changes allow).
    3. We would like the absolute minimum of time attached to monitoring, I would like to be monitored using a Doppler as much as possible.
    4. Ultimately, I want to be able to walk around and move as I wish while in labour.
    5. Please offer me pain medications only if I ask for them.
    6. During labor, we would like the ability to:
    • walk freely,
    • use the shower and labor tub,
    • change positions throughout,
    • have access to clear liquids,
    • have a quiet and encouraging environment, and
    • avoid an IV, if possible I would like a saline lock instead incase it is needed.
  • If I can feel the urge to push, I would like to push at my own pace (Mother-Directed Pushing).
  • I prefer not to have an episiotomy, but would rather tear.
  • If labor or delivery seems stalled, we would like the opportunity to try different positions (hands and knees, squatting, birth ball, etc.)
  • If possible please allow the shoulders and body of my baby to be born spontaneously, on their own.
  • No stirrups please unless I?m having a medical emergency or I ask for them.
  • We would like to not have the cord cut right away; we would like it to pulse for at least 2 minutes.
  •  We would like the baby to be placed on the mother's chest immediately after birth in order to "bond" and nurse. We would like to have as much time with our baby as we choose before baby is taken for routine procedures.
  • If a C-Section is not an emergency, please give us time alone to think about it before asking for our written consent.
  • Thank you for your support during the birth of our baby.

  • I saved this thread from a few weeks ago to read when I had more time: https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/51538898.aspx

It has several natural birth plans from this board.

  • Husband/Father of the baby:

    Midwife:

    Due Date:  May 10, 2011

    Primary Care Provider and Pediatrician:

I request the following people to be present during my labor and delivery:

    (husband),  (mother),   (photographer)

I would like to have dim light, the door always closed, and people to speak softly

I request intermittent monitoring.  During monitoring I prefer the baby heart monitor to be the prevailing sound in the room.

I would like to have no restrictions on time, movement, food or fluids during my labor.

I plan to use water/bath/shower, birthing ball, breathing techniques, massage, etc. to help with labor pain.

I want to view the birth using a mirror.

I would like my husband to catch our baby and pull her onto my abdomen as she is born.

Please wait for the umbilical cord to stop pulsing before it is clamped, and allow my husband to cut it.

I would prefer for the placenta to be born spontaneously without the use of pitocin.

Baby will be exclusively breast fed, absolutely no bottles/pacifiers without permission.

We would like all routine newborn procedures delayed until after baby has successfully nursed on both breasts.

We've chosen to refuse eye drops and vaccinations for our baby.

We would like to give our baby her first bath.

Our baby is not to leave the room without an accompanying parent.

If the baby has any problems, either my husband or I will accompany the baby at all times, absolutely no exceptions.

  • Wonderful, thank you!

  • I don't have a copy saved on the computer I'm using anymore, but I remember our Bradley instructor emphasizing to keep it simple and less is more, and always keep it to one page.  I did a first draft and she cut a bunch out, reminding us that if there are things that DH can easily ask for/advocate for on my behalf, then to let him be responsible for that and leave it off the birth plan.  If a nurse/midwife/ob takes one look at your plan and is not overwhelmed, the greater likelihood that they will follow it.

    Good Luck!

  • I did mine on https://birthplan.com/ I think it is very helpful. Good Luck.

  • I am delivering my baby at a maternity center, but I made a 'plan' in case hospital transfer is necessary.

     Labor and Birth Preferences.

    Patients Full Name:

    Patients  date of birth:

    Husbands name:

    Mother/doula/labor partner:

     Due Date:

Maternity Center (or primary birthing location):

I would like intermittent fetal monitoring, as long as my/my baby's health status permits.

I plan on a natural childbirth, so please do not offer me pain medication, unless I request it.

I have no required reason for an IV (GBS status is negative), but I have no problem with an IV only if and when it is medically indicated.

Please no procedures or medications are to be given or done to me or baby without full explanations of what it is, the benefits, and the risks are given to myself (or my husband if I am unconscious or otherwise unable to communicate) and permission is given, unless immediately needed to save the life of myself or my baby.

My baby will not be separated from me unless it is medically necessary.

I will remain flexible in my desires for my birth, pending my health and my baby's health status. I only want what is best for my baby and myself.

Wish list: (this is merely a wish list of things I would love to happen if things permit but can be done away with without a problem in the event of emergency, though some shouldn't be a problem except in the most dire of circumstances.)

I would love to be able to provide my own counter pressure during crowning, and to catch my baby!

I would like to try the 'breast crawl'...if I have the patients, lol!

I want to discover baby's gender on my own, please!

Delayed cord clamping until pulsing has stopped.

All procedures and routine exams on baby to wait until after first breastfeeding has occurred and to take place on my chest or on the bed beside me.

I will stress again that this is a wish list, not a demand. I would really love, love, love these things to take place if baby and I are well. Thank you!

Thank you for all help you provide me in bringing my baby into this world as safely and peacefully as possible.

I kept it simple and made it more of a wish list as if I do have to go to a hospital it is more then likely because of complications. I hope this gives you idea's.

Oh and I didn't add things like 'dim lights', 'music', 'eating and drinking', 'moving/changing positions', 'getting into shower/tub' etc because I am quite the advocate of 'don't ask, just do it'. Unless there are major complications, don't ask permission, you are just giving them your power and control over you, just do it.
