Houston Babies

Eliza & I could use some good thoughts please

She's been slowly not gaining weight / losing weight for about two months now.  We're working with our LC now and think we've pinpointed the problem, but she's dropped below 14 pounds and so we're giving it a week before we go see the pedi.  Her head growth is still spot on (and huge at the 95th percentile!) so she's developing normally, just not gaining.

It's just rough on us both as I have to go back to almost nursing a newborn - making sure she eats at least every two hours during the day, weighing her before and after each feed and waking her up at night to feed her.

So send us all the fat baby vibes you can spare please Smile

  • But has she gotten longer? From about 6mos on Cooper's growth stairstepped. He'd be the same weight for 2-3 months (but grow longer). Then he'd gain a few lbs, and get all plump again. Then he'd grow longer. I didn't weigh him frequently but I know of at least one 2 month period when he lost weight. Then he'd hit another growth spurt and shoot ahead. I suspect that's pretty common. I'd try not to worry too much yet. ((hugs))
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

  • Her length has dropped a bit - about 10%. And her weight went from 47 to 22 from 4-6 months then has dropped from 22 to 7 the past two weeks. I suspect based on how her clothing fits that she hasn't grown lengthwise in the past three weeks.
  • Lots of good vibes headed your way.

FWIW, C didn't gain any weight from months 5 - 7.  I was super stressed about it.  I even weaned to formula at 6 months (for that and many other reasons) and she still didn't gain.  Turns out she was just meant to be small.  She was in the 60th percentile at 4 months and has hovered around the 10th since.  There's been talk of fattening her up with butter and milkshakes over the past 18 months but I've given up worrying.  She's met all her milestones and more.  She's just genetically small.

  • You're doing a great job sticking with it through all this! Hungry baby vibes coming your way!

I suspect this might be the case with Eliza as well - as no way will she live up to her 9 lb birth weight.  And I'll be okay with no/little weight gain, we just need her to stop losing right now.

Although heaven help my hips if she goes on a milkshake diet as a toddler, haha!

  • Good luck with everything!

  • ((HUGS)) Sending lots of fat baby vibes Eliza's way and some good vibes for you as well.

You should be so proud of yourself for working so hard to BF your baby. You've done great and she's lucky to have a momma like you.

  • thanks y'all - she's holding steady, which is good.  I'd like a gain, but not losing is great!

The past three days, she's been nursing about 12 times a day so hopefully my supply will increase in the next 24 to 48 hours and we'll see some gains soon
