I got one at 35 weeks and then not again until 38 weeks. It probably depends on your doctor though. I asked mine about them and she explained why she did them, what she was checking for, etc which made me feel much more comfortable.

Mine usually starts them at 35/36, but I already had one last week. I had some major contractions this past week, lost my mucous plug, and had major back pain, so I was curious as to if I was dilated or effaced. Internals are not uncomfortable for me though and she had to do my Strep B test anyways.
I get them from 16 weeks because of history of preterm labor and needing to monitor my cervix for shortening/etc., so not much help for your question, however, to address previous posts about how painful/uncomfortable they are, I have found, after having a LOT of internals thanks to 2 pregnancies where I have them from 16 weeks on, that it depends very much on who is performing. My regular OB they are slightly uncomfortable but not bad at all and I've had the same experience with several residents at L&D. With some of the other doctors in my OB's practice they are pretty painful. But they don't HAVE to be awful, for anyone who hasn't had one and is nervous.
I had one today (35w appt), but only because I was already getting my GBS test and I have been having tons of contractions, along with a history of PTL.
I havent asked that question to my MW yet, but god im hoping it doesnt happen because I heard it is so painful!!!!!
i was terrified of getting one because the people on this site scared the hell out of me. it didn't hurt and i didn't bleed so i really didn't understand all the fuss. hopefully yours is as "pleasant" as mine was.

I'm going to have to agree. I had one and didn't feel pain... more like discomfort. I figure how bad is it compared to having a baby come out? lol. Granted, it's not the best feeling in the world, but it was not painful for me.

Re: I know this question was posted already but what week did you start getting internals?
Most doctors start at 36 or 37 weeks. Most midwives start at 39 or 40 or not at all until labour.
My doctor offered this week (37). I declined. I might do one next week, but that will be all I do until 40+.

My doctor won't do them till after 36 weeks, and only by request.
I don't plan on requesting.
