It is definitely possible. My daughter was standing herself up on everything before she was crawling. We thought she'd probably walk before she crawled, but she surprised us two weeks ago and started crawling.
She did start the whole rocking on all fours a couple weeks before crawling, so you're probably not far away from crawling! It's such an exciting time I'm sure he'll get tired of falling down once he's crawling and decide it's time to sit unsupported in no time!
He really only sits unsupported once in awhile and is wobbly. He's been crawling for a couple of weeks. He can't sit up on his own yet, either, but I can put him in a sitting position and he'll sit without holding on for a couple of seconds and then catch himself.
I see my DS headed down that same path. He can't sit unsupported yet, but he has been getting up on all fours within the past few days. He's more interested in trying to crawl or stand up than in sitting.
