December 2010 Moms

What's on your baptism party menu?

Side note: I am so happy that I get to play here today (Annabelle's been napping for almost 2 hrs - woo!).

We're hosting a little family reception at our house after her baptism in May and I'm looking for some food ideas.  I want to do a spread of small-plate items like nice sandwiches, appetizers, dips, etc. (and the grandmas have offered to help out a ton).  No sit-down dinner; instead, people will just grab plates and mingle.

What are you / did you / would you serve?

Re: What's on your baptism party menu?

  • I have a big Italian family, so we did a big Italian dinner. Big Smile Salad, garlic bread, lasagna, meatballs, Italian sausage, and then the baptism cake we ordered from a local bakery. It was delicious but a LOT of work-I think next time we'll probably serve finger foods that can be prepared the day before.

  • My family owns a restaurant, so we just had it there. They made these awesome sandwiches, we call them press sandwiches. Cut a loaf of focaccia in half and layer it with really good smoked cheeses, deli meat, baby greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, and a good balsamic vinegarette. Put the sandwich back together, wrap it really really tight with plastic wrap, and put it in the fridge with a pot of water on top of it. It is better if you make them the day before because the flavors meld together. They are AWESOME!!! We cut them into 6 pieces. They are easy to make because you can set them up assembly style.

  • I'm making a variety of quiche, a cheese platter, croissant, canapes, fresh fruit, and cupcakes.  We're going with a French theme.
  • We did it pretty simple. Had finger rolls, meat and cheeses so people could make little sandwiches, single serve bags of chips, a garden salad, chicken wings and this rice/chickpea salad that my Mom makes. And cake. It was a perfect amount of food. We had barely any left overs and it was just right for the 12:30 start of the reception.

  • We're having ours the weekend after Easter and are planning on : crackers, carrots, celery, dip platter; chips and salsa. Pasta salad, fruit salad, cold cut tray to make sandwiches and mini meatballs in the crockpot. Cake, cookies and soda.

  • We had M's baby blessing (basically a naming ceremony in our church) a few months ago.  We did Brasilian rice and beans with salad and bread.

  • We had ours right after the service, which was at 8 am, so we had breakfast foods. Fresh fruit, hashbrowns, sausage, bacon, homemade doughnuts/rolls, juice, coffee, ect. We had cake also for who ever wanted it, and those who didn't took it home.
