SSI?

The social worker at our hospiptal suggested we apply for Social Security Income due to DD's prematurity and IUGR.
I called and we know that we won't qualify for actual income but DD might be able to get medicade which would be such a relief after seeing her NICU for the first 3 days....and now we are on day 12!
I filled out the online application and we have a phone interview next week.

Has anyone else received help for these reasons? Has anyone applied and been shot down? I guess I am just wondering what I should expect?

Thanks Ladies!

Re: SSI?

  • We did get SSI because of dd's low birth weight and gestational age.  We did not receive anything until after she was discharged because it takes so long to get the paperwork through and we did not qualify after she came home from the hospital.  I think we received about $700 total which is not enough but since we paid about 20 dollars/day for parking while she was in the hospital (69 days) it helped with some of those costs.

  • We were approved based on LO's prematurity (24w, 5d), so it was an automatic qualification. He had SSI & medicaid until a few months after discharge. It was an amazing help to cover all the costs that our primary insurance didn't cover. Good luck!

  • Our social worker pre filled out SSI forms for the twins the day after birth and had us just sign. They qualiy automatically while they are in the NICU, once they are discharged it will be based on income and we are not sure if they will qualify.

We also recently applies for medical assistance because even with DH's coverage the bills are still hedry. We were approved for that as well. We may not qualify any longer after discharge but we will see.

  • Girls are on it and I work for disability. If they are low birth weight babies (think under 2.5 lbs) they are automatically qualified for 1 year. You get a small check while they are in the hospital and they adjusted the amount after they get out but the medicaid benefits remain intact for at least a year.  If they dont automatically qualify for low birth weight then a lot of preemies qualify for other health problems but that is solely dependent on the household income and resources.

I never bothered with SSI, and Judith more than qualified because of how early she was and her IUGR (she was under the limit for low birthweight).  I didn't bother with medical assistance until we got her CF diagnosis last week, and now it's a necessity.  FTR, she would've qualified for medical asisstance as well because of everything, but I didn't do it until now because our pedi wouldn't take her as a new patient if she had medical assistance (and I'm not convinced that they'll keep her now once we get it set up).  Apply and see what happens.

My sister works for a pedi's office and informed me that in NY they HAVE to take SSI patients if it's disability based(which I am sure IUGR is) not income. You might want to try it from that angle?
