Low blood sugar levels?

I didn't eat much last night - and woke up this morning and immediately felt hungry and dizzy. I knew it was low blood sugar and ate something but this is the first time it has happened to me. I lay down for a few minutes on the couch and started to feel better but it left me with a huge headache.

Anyone else experiencing this? I know I need to eat more and I will focus on that, I don't want this to happen again! Should I talk to my doc? Does this put me at risk for GD?

TIA

Re: Low blood sugar levels?

  • This literaly happens to me all the time. Most days I don't feel hungry, but dizzy and sick to my stomach. That's always my cue to snack a little more. Try a food journal if you are unsure if you are eating enough or often enough.

  • Eat more protein, your carbs should be whole wheat, stay away from bad sugars like candy etc.   If you blood sugar is low they used to tell you to eat/drink a simple sugar like soda or oj but we now know that doing that puts your blood glucose on a roller coast type pattern you will get it up fast but it will rebound and come down fast too.  So next time it happens eat some protein or drink some milk.

And the mean person in me is also screaming don't be dumb.  Your brain only runs on simple sugars and you have to have a certain amount in your blood to fuel the important brain, that is why you feel dizzy.  If your brain isn't getting enough sugar to the point where you feel side effects, what do you think is happening to your baby??

Um what do you mean by being dumb? I had an insanely busy day & evening, had a nice dinner complete with salad & pasta and didn't even feel hungry until I woke up in the morning. I eat 3 balanced meals and snack on fresh sfuit & veggies all day long - this was the first time this happened. Your advice is really not helpful.

  • First off, I don't think that last commenter was trying to insult you. You clearly said you "didn't eat much last night" and then you defended yourself by saying you had a complete meal. Try not to get so upset over someone giving you their opinion.

As for the blood sugar thing, I don't experience this in the morning but always after my workouts. If I don't eat within 15 minutes I just about faint- it's awful.

Blood sugar is a tricky thing when your pregnant. I would just start listening to your body more. If you believe "you didn't eat much" then maybe that means you didn't eat enough for your changing body.

Perhaps you could keep some crackers by the bed in case you need something quick as soon as you wake up? Also, talk to your doctor next time and see what she/he things. Good luck!

  • Yes - I've been having these fits regularly. Even passed out yesterday. I eat and eat and eat. Mentioned it to my NP at my last visit, and they can't really prove it unless they measure your sugar during the attack and then they can't really do too much about it. She measured mine (after I had eaten a whole baggie of dried apricots!!) and it was 70, which was borderline normal. Measured it at work one time when I felt fine and it was 48(!!). Not anything they can do unfortunately, just make sure to eat and not let yourself pass out and hit your head :(

  • And no - it doesn't put you at risk for GD. It's the opposite problem! GD is HYPERgylcemia (too high) and this is HYPOglycemia (too low).

Like the PP said ... you need to eat more protein. Pasta is one of those carbs that causes a steep rise in your blood sugar, all at once and then a steep decline. Proteins take longer to raise your glucose levels and will hold you over longer. Try a bedtime snack of yogurt or cheese and crackers.

Im diabetic, so I am the opposite of you, hyperglycemic ... however, sometimes I don't eat enough to cover the amount of insulin I take so I ended up being hypoglycemic. It's certainly not a welcomed feeling. To avoid reoccurances of this - try to eat smaller meals though out the day. It sounds like for the most part you're eating healthy ... just keep in mind that pregnancy can play some not so funny tricks on our body and our blood sugar.
