I am totally 1000% for pacifiers, and am more than ready to break out the one we got from the hospital. Unfortunately, BF, for some unknown reason, hates them with a passion. Refuses to even have them in the house (he doesn't know about the one from the hospital). DS just wants to suck on something. Anything. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to sit here all day and let him suck on my finger, which BF is fine with. I've given him the bink when BF was at work, and it was wonderful, I could sit him in the swing and he just sat there content as could be.
BF refuses to listen to reason, as we were both thumb-suckers until we were 4 or 5, and it would be so much easier to wean him off the pacifier than the thumb.
Do you ladies have any advice on how to talk him into it? I am at my wit's end because all my baby wants to do is suck!
Re: To use a pacifier or not to use a pacifier.
I'd say let LO use your breast all day while your BF is around and that should change his mind. H was all for pacis just because he didn't have the time or nipples suitable to soothe DD when he had to watch her. And he didn't want to wean off of fingers. H feels bad when DD is attached to my chest all day and I'm pretty sure it makes him jealous lol
This PLUS have him consider the cleanliness of your finger...
Ditto everyone else. BF's opinion, however strong, happens to be wrong. Sucking soothes newborns - sometimes nothing else will work and it can be a lifesaver. A pacifier is a tool and their use is recommended by most pediatricians.
My pedi recommended them and we use them occasionally - DD won't take one when she's really upset but it does work when she's fussy and helps get her to sleep when she's protesting a nap. MIL is totally against using pacis, too, but that won't make me stop using them. I won't let DD suck on a paci forever, but while she's a newborn, I'm going with doctors' recommendation.
Maybe suggest a timeline for taking it away. We're (hopefully) going to take DS's pacifier away around 6 months. I don't see a problem with babies having pacifiers, I think it can get out of hand when a child is 4-5 years old and still has one.
