for our 8 week dating us, we got a free photo. It just printed right out of the machine.
Then for our 11.5 week NT scan, we were charged $5.00 for 3 photos. I also noticed that at my OB office US, they also charge for the photos.
I understand that nothing is free, but couldnt $5.00 just be worked into the price that is charged to the government?

Re: do you have to pay for your US photos?
oh, our ultrasounds are free - free healthcare in Canada. SO I guess I shouldnt complain.

I agree...the government doesn't pay diddly for me! I have had 3 u/s. Dating (got one blob picture). NTS one, got one pic of the top of the head. NTS two, got a couple of profile pics.
OK you can't complain then!
We will have paid over $2500 by the time we actually deliver the baby! And we have GREAT insurance!
The government pays for mine but I'm active duty
what?? that is insane. we haven't paid a penny towards any of my dr. visits and won't with our insurance. the only thing that isn't covered is my vitamins.
Yeah... not sure if that'd qualify as great insurance to me... maybe you have a really low premium, though? Ours are pretty high IMO (~$500/mo).
Not that it matters much, we're paying our HB midwife OOP so we're out $2400 + supplies anyway. Our insurance is pretty much covering our cost of u/s and bloodwork (which isn't a small chunk of change, but in the grand scheme, they are getting off easy!)
We have not had to pay for photos. We got 1 at our 8w and 4 at our NT scan.

I am in Canada as well. My dating u/s was at a big medical imaging place and they just gave me two pictures for free.
My NT scan was at a smaller place - there are only 3 places in Ottawa where they are certifies for those u/s, and two of them are hospitals. I went to number 3, because it's in the same building as my OB. They had a HUGH sign up that they are charging 6 bucks per picture and 35,- bucks for a DVD.
Don't really need a DVD, but I paid my six bucks for the picture. So I guess it's normal. Sort of.
Me either.

I'm in the same boat as this PP. All we will pay by the time it is all said and done is $150 at delivery and even at that, some hospitals will give you a discount if you pay before you and baby are discharged. Talk about crazy differences in insurance coverage.
Ditto, except I'm the dependent spouse of an active duty serivcemember. My NT scan was done on the British economy though, where we are stationed, and the sign there said it was 2.50 pounds per picture. As it turns out, the doctor didn't print off any extra anyway, so it was a moot point. I'll get pics at my 22 week anatomy scan though, and they'll be free.
So far we've had England and Canada who charges for pics, and both have free healthcare. I think we found the connection.
Wow, charging $5 for what has to be a $0.20 print-out. That's absurd.
We've had about 7 or 8 ultrasounds (between our RE's and our OB's offices). They've given us printouts for free at all of them.
Other than our $20 co-pay for the first OB office visits and my prenatals, we haven't had to pay for anything. Not any testing, ultrasounds, visits. We'll be paying extra out-of-pocket at the hospital for a private room, but that's the only substantial cost that insurance won't cover for us.

It is nice to not have to think about it.. but it can be really sad when you get your paychecks and see how much money they take away for taxes!!!
I had one emergency u/s, where I did not receive any pictures. After my NT scan, I received 15 pictures and did not pay for them.
I will pay about $250 for my OB (prenatal, delivery, postnatal) out of pocket. I am not sure how much the hospital charges will be yet, but I will pay 10% of those fees and baby related fees ($500 deductible and then 10% after that). I consider my insurance pretty good and I feel fortunate that I pay so little oop. We pay about $250 a month for our family of three (and it will be the same with the baby added).

I'd rather pay lots of taxes then be facing bankruptcy as a country! It's really not that bad and our economy doesn't suffer because of it. Yikes! Good luck with your debt ceiling.
